What a São Miguel trip costs in 2026: tourist tax, hot pools, tickets, fuel and buses
The fixed costs of a São Miguel trip in 2026: Ponta Delgada's EUR 2 a night tourist tax (three nights at most), Poça da Dona Beija at EUR 12 or EUR 16 and Terra Nostra at EUR 17, the EUR 8 Lagoa do Fogo shuttle, museums free on Sundays, whale watching from EUR 70, the October 2026 fuel cap, the EUR 0.50 city bus, and why the EUR 61 Azores Fare is for residents only.
Your flight, your room and your hire car will be the biggest items on a São Miguel budget, and none of them has a fixed price: they move with the date and with how early you book. Most of the smaller costs are fixed, though, and published. This guide collects those: the tourist tax, the hot pools, the Lagoa do Fogo shuttle, museums, a whale-watching trip, fuel and the city bus.
Every figure carries the year it applies to. Prices change, so check the source before you go.
The tourist tax
Since 1 January 2025 the municipality of Ponta Delgada has charged a tourist tax of EUR 2 per guest per night. It stops after three consecutive nights in the same place, so a week in one Ponta Delgada hotel costs EUR 6 per person in tax. Guests under 13 pay nothing, and so do Azores residents who can prove it, people staying for medical treatment (with one companion) and guests with a physical disability of 60% or more. At a campsite the rate is EUR 1.
Your hotel, guesthouse or holiday flat collects it during your stay, so it may not be in the price you saw when you booked. Ponta Delgada is one of six municipalities on São Miguel, and the other five were reported to start charging EUR 2 a night on the same date, with their own limits. Furnas, for example, belongs to Povoação, so a week split between Ponta Delgada and Furnas means two separate charges. The bill from each place shows the tax.
Hot pools: three places, three prices
Three places on the island sell entry to thermal pools, and their prices differ more than you might expect.
- Poça da Dona Beija, Furnas (2026): EUR 12 per person until 17:30 and EUR 16 from 18:00. Children aged 2 to 6 pay EUR 10 or EUR 14, under-2s nothing. A ticket gives you 1 hour 30 minutes and is sold online only. A towel costs EUR 4 and a locker EUR 2, each with a EUR 20 cash deposit, so bring your own towel and some cash.
- Parque Terra Nostra, Furnas (as listed in autumn 2026): EUR 17 for an adult, EUR 14.50 for children and seniors. That covers the garden and the big iron-coloured thermal pool, open 10:30 to 16:30.
- Caldeira Velha, near Ribeira Grande: the regional parks sell a full ticket with the pools and a cheaper visit ticket without them, by day and time slot on their booking site. The price shows only once you choose a slot, so check it there.
A couple who do Dona Beija in the afternoon and Terra Nostra the same day pay EUR 58. Going to Dona Beija after 18:00 adds EUR 8. How to fit both into one day is in our Furnas guide.
The Lagoa do Fogo shuttle
In summer the road up to Lagoa do Fogo is closed to visitors' cars and a shuttle bus runs instead. In 2026 it ran from 1 August to 30 September, 09:00 to 20:00, and during the Easter school holidays. A non-resident adult paid EUR 8, children aged 7 to 12 and over-65s EUR 4, and children up to 6 rode free. One ticket lets you get on and off at each stop. Outside those weeks you drive up and pay nothing, fog permitting. The parking and the viewpoints are covered in Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo.
Museums cost little, and Sundays are free
- Museu Carlos Machado, Ponta Delgada (2026): EUR 2 per site, or EUR 5 for Santo André, the Sacred Art centre and Santa Bárbara on the same day. Free on Sundays.
- Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre, Ribeira Grande (2026): EUR 3, free on Sundays and municipal holidays, and free for children aged 14 and under.
If the weather turns, a Sunday with both costs nothing. More indoor options are in rainy day on São Miguel.
Whale watching and the islet
A whale-watching trip is likely to be the most expensive ticket of your week. Futurismo, one of the Ponta Delgada operators, listed EUR 70 per adult plus a EUR 4.20 online booking fee in October 2026, with children aged 6 to 12 at half price and under-6s free. Picos de Aventura listed a half-day trip from EUR 74.90. Two adults should budget about EUR 150. Seasons and boat types are compared in whale watching from Ponta Delgada.
The boat to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is much cheaper, but the club that runs it does not publish fares. A local report in August 2026 gave EUR 15 return for non-residents. Ask at the ticket office, and read the islet guide for the daily caps.
Fuel and the car
The regional government caps fuel prices in the Azores and revises the cap every month. From 1 October 2026 the maximum was EUR 1.924 a litre for unleaded 95 and EUR 1.939 for diesel, so filling a 50-litre tank costs at most about EUR 96 to 97. The expressways charge no tolls.
The hire car itself has no fixed price. Get quotes for your dates, and book early for July and August. Road rules and the summer closure are in driving on São Miguel.
The bus
In Ponta Delgada the four city minibus lines cost EUR 0.50 a ride on board, or EUR 4.00 for ten trips, according to the city's brochure. They run on working days from 7:30 to 19:30. The island buses to Furnas, Sete Cidades and the north coast do not publish a fare table online, so ask the driver or at the CRP office on Rua do Brum. What works without a car is in getting around São Miguel without a car.
Flights: the EUR 61 fare is not for visitors
You will see the "Azores Fare" quoted as EUR 61 return between any two islands. That price is real, but only people with tax residence in the Azores can buy it. Visitors pay normal fares, priced by date. Who flies to Ponta Delgada now is in getting to São Miguel.
What you can price before you leave
- Fixed and published: the tourist tax, the hot pools, the shuttle, the museums, the city bus and the fuel cap.
- Published by the operator but changing: whale-watching trips.
- Quoted by date: flights, rooms and hire cars, so book these first.
- Not published: island bus fares, taxis and the islet boat, so ask locally.
