Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo: the boat, tickets, swimming and the rules
Only 400 people a day may land on the crater islet off Vila Franca do Campo, and only 200 at a time. The 2026 boat season and timetable, how the online quota and the marina ticket office work, the wait when the islet is full, swimming after the 2025 ban, and what is forbidden in the reserve.
The Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is the volcanic islet off São Miguel's south coast with a round lagoon of seawater inside it. Only 400 people a day may land, and only 200 at a time, so whether you get there on the day you want depends on when you buy and how early you queue. This guide covers the boat, the ticket rules, what you can do once you are there, and what is banned.
All dates and rules below are for the 2026 season. The club that runs the boat sets them again every year, so check before you go.
What the islet is
The islet sits about 500 metres off Vila Franca do Campo, the old town on the south coast about 25 km east of Ponta Delgada. It covers roughly 8 hectares and rises to 62 metres. According to the Azores Natural Park, it is what is left of a tuff cone thrown up by an underwater eruption, possibly 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. The sea has broken into the cone and split it into two parts, Ilhéu Grande and Ilhéu Pequeno. The sea reaches the crater through the gaps, and the boat club describes the lagoon inside as calm, clear water.
It is a protected area where Cory's shearwaters and common terns nest, which is why the number of visitors is capped.
When the boat runs
In 2026 the crossings run from 12 June to 11 October. Outside that window there is no public boat, and you see the islet from the shore.
Departures start at 10:00 and run every hour until 18:00. On busy days the club adds extra trips every 20 to 25 minutes. The crossing is short, roughly ten minutes. You can stay on the islet as long as you like, up to the last return at about 18:10. The club warns that the queue for the last boat back can be long.
The boat is the Cruzeiro do Ilhéu, a traditional open wooden boat run by the Clube Naval de Vila Franca do Campo. It is the only boat licensed to carry passengers to the islet. Trips can be cancelled in bad weather, and in that case you get a refund or a new date.
How to get a ticket
There are two ways in, and neither lets you reserve.
- Online: the club sells 100 tickets a day on its website, from 10 days to 1 day ahead, up to 5 per purchase. A service fee is added and is not refunded. You still have to take the ticket to the ticket office to be validated before you board.
- At the ticket office: the rest of the daily quota is sold on the day only, at most 2 tickets per person. The office is on the south side of the Vila Franca do Campo marina and opened from 09:45 to 17:00 in 2026, closing for lunch from 12:00 to 12:45.
Children up to 10 travel free with a parent or guardian.
The club does not publish its fare on its ticket pages. An August 2026 report put the non-resident return fare at €15 and the resident fare at €6, after a rise. Earlier in the year another site listed €10 for non-residents. Check the price when you buy.
If the online quota for your date has gone, the club's advice is to come to the office early on the day, because the tickets sold there run out fast.
The 200-person rule and the wait
The limit that shapes your day is the 200 on the islet at once, not the 400 a day. When 200 people are on the islet, the boat stops and only starts again as people come back. On a hot afternoon you can hold a ticket and still stand on the quay for a while. The club suggests a hat, sunglasses and sun cream for the queue.
If you can, take one of the first boats. The waits start when the islet reaches 200, which cannot happen until several boats have landed.
Swimming and snorkelling
Swimming was banned through the summer of 2025 because of poor water quality. The ban was lifted for 2026: the islet is on the official list of bathing waters, with a season from 1 June to 11 October 2026. The water is tested every year, so a future summer could close it again even though the boat still runs. Our São Miguel beaches guide has the water temperature by month.
Snorkelling in the lagoon and around the rocks is allowed, and the ticket office hires out masks. The Natural Park lists freediving and birdwatching as the islet's other uses.
The islet has hosted the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, in July 2014 from a 27-metre platform and again in June 2019.
What you cannot do
The islet is protected under regional law, and the list of bans is long. It includes:
- leaving litter
- fishing of any kind, spearfishing included
- scuba diving
- music speakers
- landing private boats or tying them up without permission
- taking or damaging plants, animals or rocks
- staying overnight
- fires or barbecues
Fines run from €125 to €45,000. Take water with you, and take all your rubbish back on the boat.
Getting to Vila Franca do Campo
Vila Franca do Campo is about 25 km from Ponta Delgada along the south coast. Without a car you can take the bus; there is also an evening bus circuit from Ponta Delgada through Lagoa and Vila Franca. Our guide to getting around São Miguel without a car has the details.
The beaches at Água d'Alto, just west of town, are an easy second half of the day if you spend only the morning on the islet.
Quick answers
How do you get to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo? By the Cruzeiro do Ilhéu, the club boat from the Vila Franca do Campo marina. In 2026 it runs from 12 June to 11 October, every hour from 10:00 to 18:00. It is the only passenger boat allowed to land.
Do you need to book the islet in advance? You cannot reserve, but you can buy online 1 to 10 days ahead from a quota of 100 tickets a day. The rest are sold at the marina on the day, at most 2 per person.
How many people can visit the islet? 400 a day and 200 at the same time. When 200 are on the islet, the boat waits until people come back.
Can you swim at the islet? Yes in 2026, when it was an official bathing water from 1 June to 11 October. Swimming was banned in 2025 because of water quality, so check the current season before you go.
