A rainy day on São Miguel: hot pools, museums and what still works by area

What to do on São Miguel when it rains: the hot pools of Furnas that stay open in the rain, the Arquipélago art centre and the town museums of Ribeira Grande, the north-coast tea factories, and the Carlos Machado Museum and Gruta do Carvão lava tube in Ponta Delgada. With the 2026 hours and prices, and which day of the week closes what.

When rain settles over São Miguel, the crater lakes are the first thing to drop off the plan. The viewpoints sit high in the cloud, and the regional tourism office warns that visibility up there falls away on rainy and foggy days. The rest of the island still works. Furnas has hot pools that stay open in the rain, Ribeira Grande has a contemporary art centre in an old distillery and a cluster of small town museums, and Ponta Delgada has its museum and a lava tube you can walk through. The thing to plan around is the day of the week, because Monday and Sunday close different doors.

The hours and prices below were published for 2026. They change with the season, so check before you drive across the island.

Furnas: get into the hot water

Rain is no reason to skip Furnas. The valley gets roughly twice the yearly rainfall of Ponta Delgada anyway, and warm iron-rich water feels better when it is pouring.

Poça da Dona Beija says outright that it opens on rainy days. It asks bathers to leave the pools if there is thunder or lightning. It opens every day from 8:30 to 23:00, with last entry at 21:30, and a ticket gives you 90 minutes. In 2026 adults paid €12 before 17:30 and €16 from 18:00, children aged 2 to 6 paid €10 or €14, and under-2s went free. Tickets are sold online only and cannot be refunded or changed, so buy them once you are sure of the day. Towels cost €4 and lockers €2, each with a €20 cash deposit.

Parque Terra Nostra is the other choice: a large garden with a big thermal pool and smaller jacuzzis at 38 to 42 °C. In 2026 the adult ticket was €17 (€14.50 for children and seniors), and the park listed its hours as 10:30 to 16:30. The park suggests staying in the water no more than 30 minutes at a time and wearing a dark swimsuit, because the iron stains light fabric.

Between soaks, the Microbial Observatory of the Azores (OMIC) is a small science centre about the microorganisms that live in the hot springs, volcanic caves and lakes. It is in the old thermal bath house in the Caldeiras area of the village. It publishes no fixed hours on the regional tourism site, so call +351 296 584 765 before you go.

Our Furnas guide covers the cozido lunch and the rest of the day.

Ribeira Grande: art and town museums

Ribeira Grande is on the north coast, 17 km from Ponta Delgada, and its indoor sights are close together in the old centre.

The Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre occupies a former alcohol distillery. The town hall granted the factory its water rights in March 1893. Today it runs changing exhibitions. In October 2026 these included "Garbage in Paradise" (until 15 November) and a show of Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes (until 8 November). It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry to the exhibitions at 17:30. Entry was €3 in 2026, half price for anyone aged 15 to 25 or over 65, and free on Sundays and for children aged 14 and under.

A few streets away, the Ribeira Grande Municipal Museum has four small branches in the old centre, all within walking distance of each other:

  • The main building, with old trades such as shoemaking, weaving, a barbershop and a pharmacy, tiles from the 16th to the 20th century, and the oldest mechanical nativity scene in the Azores.
  • The Azorean Emigration Museum, in the 19th-century fish market, about the islanders who left for Brazil, the United States and Canada.
  • The Living Museum of Franciscanism, in the old convent church of Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe.
  • The Arcane House, built around the work of Madre Margarida Isabel do Apocalipse: a wood-and-glass case two metres square, with 92 scenes from the Old and New Testaments on three levels.

The hours listed by the regional museum network in October 2026: all four branches Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00, and on Saturdays the main building and the Emigration Museum from 10:00 to 17:00. They are closed on Sundays.

The north coast: tea under cover

East of Ribeira Grande, the two tea factories at Porto Formoso and Gorreana can be visited indoors when the fields outside are wet. Porto Formoso picks and processes its tea from April to September and publishes its hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00 from October to April and 9:00 to 18:00 from May to September. Gorreana publishes none on its own site, so ring +351 296 442 349 first. Our tea plantations guide has the details.

Without a car, bus line 110 runs from Ponta Delgada through Ribeira Grande, Porto Formoso and Maia to Furnas. In the 2026 timetable it left Ponta Delgada at 7:15 and 15:15 and came back from Furnas at 9:10 and 17:10.

Ponta Delgada: the museum and the lava tube

The Carlos Machado Museum was founded in 1876. Its main site is the former convent of Santo André, where a natural history circuit opened in 2016, and the Sacred Art centre is in the old Jesuit church. From October to March it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30, with last entry at 17:00. From April to September it opens at 10:00, with last entry at 17:30. It is closed on Mondays. In 2026 each centre cost €2, three centres on the same day €5, and entry was free on Sundays.

The Gruta do Carvão is a lava tube under the west side of the city, entered from Rua do Paim. Its mapped sections add up to 1,912 metres. Visits are guided. The short tour covers about 200 metres in 30 to 45 minutes. The long one goes about a kilometre in two to three hours and is not for children under 10. It opens daily from 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00. Published adult prices disagree between sources, so book and confirm the price with the Amigos dos Açores association, which runs it.

On the northern edge of the city, the Arruda greenhouses in Fajã de Baixo are the oldest pineapple greenhouses in the Azores, started in the 19th century. A pineapple there takes about 18 months to ripen, and you walk through the glasshouses in their various stages. Our Ponta Delgada guide has a walking plan for the old town.

Which day of the week

  • Monday: the Carlos Machado Museum and Arquipélago are both closed. Go to Ribeira Grande for the town museums and Porto Formoso, then on to Furnas for the pools.
  • Tuesday to Friday: every place above with published hours is open. Ponta Delgada in the morning, Ribeira Grande after lunch, or the whole day in Furnas.
  • Saturday: the Carlos Machado Museum and Arquipélago are open. In Ribeira Grande only the main museum and the Emigration Museum open, from 10:00.
  • Sunday: the Ribeira Grande museums and the Porto Formoso factory are closed. The Carlos Machado Museum and Arquipélago are free, and the Furnas pools are open as usual.

When the cloud lifts, go for the lakes straight away. Our Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo guide explains how to read the fog.

Quick answers

What can you do on São Miguel when it rains? Soak in the hot pools at Furnas, which stay open in the rain. Visit the Arquipélago art centre and the town museums in Ribeira Grande, stop at the tea factories on the north coast, or go to the Carlos Machado Museum and the Gruta do Carvão lava tube in Ponta Delgada.

Is Poça da Dona Beija open when it rains? Yes. It opens every day from 8:30 to 23:00 and says it stays open in the rain, but asks bathers to leave the pools in thunder or lightning. In 2026 adults paid €12 before 17:30 and €16 after 18:00, booked online.

Which museums on São Miguel are free? The Carlos Machado Museum and the Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre are free on Sundays. Arquipélago is also free for children aged 14 and under.

Should I visit Sete Cidades or Lagoa do Fogo in the rain? Usually not. The viewpoints are often inside the cloud on wet days. Keep them for the first clear morning and spend the rain in Furnas or Ribeira Grande.
