São Miguel in winter: weather, hot pools, short days and what stays open
São Miguel from November to March: mild but wet, with December the wettest month and sunset at about 17:26 on the shortest day. Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija stay open all winter, the Ponta Delgada museum keeps winter hours, whale boats still sail, the Lagoa do Fogo road is open to cars again, and the beaches have no lifeguards.
From November to March, São Miguel is mild and green, and wet. Daytime highs on the coast stay around 17 to 20 °C, but it rains on 11 to 15 days a month and the crater lakes are often in cloud. The island does not close for the season. The hot pools, the museums in Ponta Delgada and the whale-watching boats keep going, some on shorter hours. Plan around short days and a sea that cancels boat trips, and keep the lakes for the first clear morning.
The weather from November to March
The official climate normals for Ponta Delgada (IPMA, 1991 to 2020) put December as the wettest month, with about 153 mm of rain on 15 days. November, January and March each get 95 to 102 mm on about 12 or 13 days, and February is the least wet of the five at about 87 mm. Average highs run from 19.9 °C in November down to about 17.4 °C in February, and average lows stay above 12 °C. Humidity sits around 80 % all year, so a damp day feels cooler than the number.
The bigger change is sunshine. December gets about 93 hours of it, less than half of August's 213. The sea cools to about 18 °C in December and 16 °C in February and March.
These are coastal figures. The Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint is at 776 m, and the regional tourism office warns that visibility at the lakes drops on rainy and foggy days. In winter that happens often. Check a webcam or look up at the ridge before you drive.
Short days
On 21 December 2026 the sun rises over Ponta Delgada at about 07:54 and sets at about 17:26: 9 hours 31 minutes of daylight. Clocks go back an hour on 25 October 2026, and from late November the sun sets before half past five. Start walks in the morning and be down before four. A trail that takes three hours in June leaves no margin on a December afternoon.
Hot pools
A hot pool on a cool, grey day is the best thing about a winter visit, and the three big ones all stay open.
Parque Terra Nostra in Furnas lists the same hours all year: 10:30 to 16:30 every day, holidays included, closed only on 25 December. A ticket was €17 in October 2026 and covers the garden and the thermal pool. You can go in until 16:00.
Poça da Dona Beija, also in Furnas, is open every day from 08:30 to 23:00, with last entry at 21:30. In October 2026 it cost €12 until 17:30 and €16 from 18:00. It stays open in the rain; in lightning or thunder you are asked to leave the pools. We would go after dark on a cold evening.
Caldeira Velha, above Ribeira Grande, sells tickets by day and time slot on the natural parks booking page. We could not find its winter hours published, so book there and check the time you are given.
Our Furnas guide explains how to fit the pools around the cozido lunch.
Museums and tea
The Museu Carlos Machado in Ponta Delgada keeps winter hours from 1 October to 31 March: Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, 09:30 to 17:00 for last admission. It is closed on Mondays. The Porto Formoso tea factory on the north coast opens Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00 from October to April, an hour less than in summer, and stays shut on Sundays.
For more wet-weather options by area, from the Arquipélago arts centre to the Gruta do Carvão lava tube, see our rainy-day São Miguel guide.
The lakes and the walks
Winter makes Lagoa do Fogo easier to reach. In 2026 the road up to the lake, between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água, was closed to visitors' cars from 1 August to 30 September, and a paid shuttle ran instead. The same scheme runs over Easter. Outside those dates you drive up yourself and stop where you like, cloud permitting.
Trails close more often after heavy rain. On 13 October 2026 the official alerts page listed six São Miguel routes as temporarily closed, among them Ribeira do Faial da Terra (PR11SMI) and Nascentes de Santo António (PR17SMI). Check trails.visitazores.com on the morning you walk, wear shoes that grip on wet basalt and leave a muddy descent for another day. Our hiking guide suggests which walks to pick.
Whale watching and the beaches
Whale watching runs all year from Ponta Delgada because sperm whales live around the island. Futurismo listed its trip in October 2026 as available in every season, at €70 per adult plus a €4.20 online booking fee, for about three hours. From January to March you mostly see the resident whales and dolphins. Rough seas cancel more trips in winter. If the weather does not allow a safe trip, the company offers another date or a refund, so book early in your stay and leave a day to spare. See our whale-watching guide.
The beaches have no lifeguards in winter. In 2026 the guarded season ended on 13 September at Milícias, Pópulo, Água d'Alto and Mosteiros, on 30 September at Santa Bárbara and on 11 October at the Vila Franca islet. A sea at 16 to 18 °C suits a short dip, not an afternoon of swimming.
Getting there and around
São Miguel is the best-connected island in the Azores, so winter matters less for getting there than it does on the small islands. Schedules still change. The SATA group's summer flight programme for 2026 runs from 29 March to 24 October, so check which routes fly in winter before you fix dates, and keep a spare day before a long-haul connection.
Hire a car if you can. The bus to Furnas, line 110, runs at weekends too, but with two departures a day from Ponta Delgada it leaves little room for the short daylight. Our driving guide covers the roads, which get slippery in the rain and foggy on the ridges.
Who should go in winter
Winter São Miguel suits people who want the hot springs, the food and green walks without the August crowds, and who can wait out a wet morning. It is the wrong season for beach days and for a tight plan built around the crater lakes. If you want sun and a warm sea, see our best time to visit São Miguel.
