June and September suit most visitors to São Miguel: warm, quieter than August, and June is one of the driest months. Ponta Delgada's 1991-2020 normals month by month, sea temperature and the 2026 bathing season, whales and hydrangeas by season, Santo Cristo (10 May 2026, 2 May 2027) and Tremor, the 2026 Lagoa do Fogo shuttle, and official overnight-stay figures for August and September 2025.

For most visitors the best months on São Miguel are June and September. Both are warm and both are quieter than August, and June is one of the driest months of the year. July and August bring the most sun, the warmest sea and the most people. From November to March the island stays mild but gets more rain and much less sun, which suits walking and the hot springs better than the beach. If you want a festival, the dates to plan around are Senhor Santo Cristo in late April or May and Tremor in late March.

The weather month by month

The official climate normals for Ponta Delgada, measured at 35 metres between 1991 and 2020, give the range:

  • January: average high 17.5 °C, low 12.7 °C, 102 mm of rain on about 13 days, 97 hours of sun
  • April: 18.8 °C and 13.3 °C, 80 mm on about 10 days, 141 hours
  • June: 22.4 °C and 16.8 °C, 44 mm on about 7 days, 163 hours
  • July: 24.7 °C and 18.9 °C, 26 mm on about 5 days, 208 hours, the driest month
  • August: 26.0 °C and 19.9 °C, 46 mm on about 7 days, 213 hours, the warmest and sunniest month
  • September: 25.0 °C and 19.1 °C, 78 mm on about 9 days, 175 hours
  • October: 22.6 °C and 17.1 °C, 118 mm on about 14 days, 142 hours
  • December: 18.3 °C and 13.4 °C, 153 mm on about 15 days, 93 hours, the wettest month

Temperature barely decides anything here. On the coast, average lows stay above 12 °C even in February and average highs top out at 26 °C in August. What changes through the year is rain and sunshine: December has less than half the sun of August. Humidity stays around 80 % all year, so a winter day feels damper than the thermometer suggests.

These figures come from the coast. The crater lakes sit much higher: the Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint is at 776 metres. Up there it is cooler and often inside the cloud, even when Ponta Delgada is sunny. The regional tourism office warns that visibility at the lakes drops on rainy and foggy days. That holds in summer too, so keep Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo flexible and go on the first clear morning.

Sea temperature and the beach season

The sea around São Miguel is coldest in February and March, at about 16 °C, and warmest in August, at about 24 °C. It stays around 23 °C in September and 22 °C in October, so autumn water is warmer than June water (about 20 °C).

Lifeguards work only during the official bathing season, which each beach sets separately. In 2026 the guarded beaches opened between 1 and 15 June. Most closed between mid and late September. Santa Bárbara on the north coast ran to 30 September and the Vila Franca islet to 11 October. Outside those dates you can still swim, but nobody is watching the water. For a trip built around swimming, aim for July to September.

Whales, flowers and other seasonal things

Whale watching runs all year from Ponta Delgada, because sperm whales and several dolphin species live around the island. Spring is the season for the big migrating whales, blue and fin whales among them, roughly April to June. Summer adds spotted and striped dolphins and pilot whales. In winter you mostly see the residents, and rough seas cancel more trips.

The hydrangeas that line the roads start flowering in June and are at their fullest around August. Come before June and you see the hedges, not the flowers.

Festivals worth planning around

Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is the largest religious festival in the Azores. It takes over Ponta Delgada for several days around the fifth Sunday after Easter, with an outdoor Mass on Campo de São Francisco and an afternoon procession through the main streets. In 2026 the procession was on Sunday 10 May. In 2027 the fifth Sunday after Easter falls on 2 May. Many emigrant families fly in from the United States and Canada for it, so book rooms in the city early if your dates overlap. Check the official programme for the year.

Tremor is a music festival spread across Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande and Lagoa, with concerts indoors and outdoors and walks with music along the way. The 2026 edition ran from 24 to 28 March. It is small: the first batch of 2026 passes was 400 tickets at €80.

Lagoa do Fogo in summer

In 2026, from 1 August to 30 September, the road up to the lake between Caldeira Velha and Casa da Água was closed to visitors' private cars from 09:00 to 20:00. Visitors used a shuttle bus instead, at €8 for a non-resident adult. In 2025 the same scheme started on 15 June and cost €5. The dates and the price have changed every year, so check them before you plan a day around the lake. Outside the shuttle season you drive up yourself.

Crowds

August is busy. In August 2025 hotels and other licensed accommodation on São Miguel logged 419,400 overnight stays, about two thirds of the whole archipelago's total. The month after, September 2025, it logged 335,000, a fifth fewer, and in June 2026 it logged 319,900. If your dates fall in August, book the hire car and the room early. Of the two quieter months, September is the warmer: average highs of 25.0 °C against 22.4 °C in June, and a sea of about 23 °C against 20 °C.

Which month to choose

For swimming and sun, go from late June to September, and in August book ahead. For walking, late April to early June and October work well: mild and green, with more rain than in summer. Spring is also the season for the large whales. From November to March, come for the hot springs, the food and shorter walks, save the crater lakes for a clear day and pack a rain jacket. For a festival, aim for the Santo Cristo week, which falls in late April or May, or for Tremor in late March.
