Where to stay on São Miguel: Ponta Delgada, Furnas, Ribeira Grande or Sete Cidades

Most people with a week on São Miguel end up choosing between one base in Ponta Delgada and a split stay, usually the city plus two or three nights in Furnas. The island is small enough that every main sight works as a day trip from town: by road, Furnas is about 43 km from Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades about 26 km and Ribeira Grande about 19 km. What the base changes is how you spend the evenings and how often you drive the same road twice.

• One base, first visit, no strong plans: Ponta Delgada.
• You want the hot springs at night and the valley to yourself early: add two or three nights in Furnas.
• You are splitting the island between east and west and want short drives both ways: Ribeira Grande on the north coast.
• You are here to walk the crater rim and watch the sun go down on the west coast: Sete Cidades or Mosteiros, for a night or two.

Ponta Delgada is the island's main city and the largest municipality in the Azores, with 67,287 residents in 2021. The airport is about 3 km from the centre, so arrival day is short, and the inter-island ferries leave from the city's port. It also has the widest choice of restaurants and rooms on the island.

The city is on the drier side of the island, too. The Afonso Chaves observatory in the city records about 990 mm of rain a year (1991-2020 normals). The Furnas station inland measured close to twice that, about 1,970 mm (1976-2002). The two series cover different years, so read them as a rough comparison. The gap is still large enough to plan around: keep the crater lakes for the clear days and the city for the wet ones.

The trade-offs:

• Every day trip starts with the same drive out of town, and Furnas is the longest of them at around 43 km.
• Ponta Delgada is the archipelago's main cruise port, and a single ship call can double the number of people in the old town.
• The nearest beaches, Praia das Milícias and Praia do Pópulo, are Blue Flag town beaches with south-coast swell rather than quiet coves.

Driving distances from central Ponta Delgada, by the fastest road:

• Ribeira Grande: about 19 km.
• Vista do Rei viewpoint above Sete Cidades: about 20 km.
• Caldeira Velha hot springs: about 24 km.
• Sete Cidades village: about 26 km.
• Furnas: about 43 km.

Furnas is a village of about 1,400 people (2011 census) at 207 m, in a volcanic valley with some thirty springs of different temperatures and chemistry. It is the island's classic day trip from Ponta Delgada, and a night or two here changes what you can do.

Two opening times explain it. Parque Terra Nostra is open to day visitors from 10:30 to 16:30, but guests of the hotel inside the garden have access to its thermal pool at any hour. Poça da Dona Beija, the hot-spring pools on the edge of the village, is open until 23:00 with last entry at 21:30. If you sleep in Furnas, you can soak after dark and walk the lake circuit (PRC06SMI, 9.4 km, about three hours) in the morning before Terra Nostra even opens.

The trade-offs:

• It gets roughly twice the rain of Ponta Delgada, and humidity at the Furnas station averages 87%. Pack a layer.
• Sete Cidades is about 69 km away, which makes the west a long day.
• It is a small village. Choice of restaurants and rooms is limited compared with the city, so book early for summer.

One more reason to stay: Praia do Fogo at Ribeira Quente, reached through the tunnel below Furnas, is a sheltered black-sand beach where the sand is warm from geothermal water seeping through it.

Ribeira Grande is the choice for people who want to reach both ends of the island without committing to either. It is about 19 km from Ponta Delgada and 27 km from Furnas, and the Caldeira Velha hot springs are about 7 km uphill. In summer, the shuttle to Lagoa do Fogo also starts at the Caldeira Velha car park, so the north coast is the closest base to the crater lake.

The coast itself is different from the south. Areal de Santa Bárbara is a kilometre of open black sand where the island's surf schools work; rips are normal and it is a poor place for a quiet swim. The tidal pools of the Poças da Ribeira Grande, walled off from the swell below the town, are the calmer option. Further east, the Gorreana tea plantation, working since 1883, has a short circular walk through its rows (PRC28SMI, 3.3 km).

The trade-offs:

• The north coast faces the open Atlantic, so beach days depend more on the swell than on the south side.
• Sete Cidades is about 44 km away.
• Outside the town centre you will be driving for dinner.

Sete Cidades is a village inside a volcanic crater, on the shore of twin lakes whose surface sits at 259 m. It is only about 26 km from Ponta Delgada, so it is easy to see in half a day. A night here is for a specific kind of trip: walking the rim trails (PR03SMI from Vista do Rei ends at the village church; PR04SMI comes in along the eastern rim, 11.7 km), and being close by when the cloud lifts off the crater.

The west coast adds the sunset. The lava pools at Mosteiros look straight at the four islets offshore and are where people watch the sun go down. At Ponta da Ferraria, a hot spring runs into a rope-held sea pool whose temperature depends on the tide: hot around low water, cooled by the sea at high tide.

The trade-offs:

• Furnas is about 69 km away, so an east-side day is long.
• It is a small village, and quiet after dark.
• The rim viewpoints only work in clear weather, so staying here is a bet on the forecast.

• Seven nights, first visit: four in Ponta Delgada, three in Furnas. Do the west and Lagoa do Fogo from the city, the east from the valley.
• Five nights or fewer: stay in Ponta Delgada and take Furnas as a full day trip. Changing hotel costs half a day you do not have.
• Ten nights or more, keen walker: three in Ponta Delgada, three in Furnas, two on the north coast, two in Sete Cidades or Mosteiros.
• No car: stay in Ponta Delgada. The distances above are short, but a base outside the city without a car limits you to what is within walking distance.

Is Ponta Delgada or Furnas the better base on São Miguel?

Ponta Delgada for a single base: it is next to the airport, drier, and has the most choice. Furnas is better as a second base for two or three nights, because Poça da Dona Beija stays open until 23:00 and you can walk the valley before the sights open.
