Diving and snorkelling on São Miguel: the Dori wreck, the Caloura caves and 2026 prices
The eleven São Miguel sites in the regional diving guide, grouped by the marina you leave from: the Dori Liberty ship and the Relva reef five to 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada, the Caloura caves, the old anchors and the reefs east of Vila Franca do Campo. With the Formigas and Ambrósio trips (July to October), Espírito Azul's October 2026 prices (€60 for one boat dive, €110 for two, snorkelling €60), the conflicting rules on the Vila Franca islet, and the chamber at the Ponta Delgada hospital.
Where you dive on São Miguel depends mostly on which marina you leave from. Boats from Ponta Delgada reach the Dori wreck in five minutes. Boats from Vila Franca do Campo reach the caves at Caloura, the reefs around the islet and the old anchors in front of the town in 2 to 15 minutes. The regional diving guide lists eleven sites on the island. Below they are grouped by harbour, with what one Vila Franca dive centre charged in October 2026 and what to know about the decompression chamber.
From Ponta Delgada: the Dori and the Relva reef
The Dori is the site most divers come for, and the regional guide rates it five stars. It was a Liberty ship, built in the United States during the Second World War, and one of the few of its type that took part in Operation Overlord off Normandy. It sank 800 metres off Ponta Delgada on 16 January 1964. The top of the stern lies at 9 metres and the bow at 20, on sand, and the current is weak, so the wreck suits every level and is listed for snorkelling too. It is now an underwater archaeological park and fishing is banned around it, which is why the fish are so thick. Look for the boilers, usually ringed by white seabreams. From the Ponta Delgada marina the ride takes five minutes.
Baixa do Espelho, also called Baixa da Relva, is a reef about 200 metres off the parish of Relva, 20 minutes west of the marina by boat. It runs from 6 to 23 metres in weak current and is listed for all divers and for snorkelling. A small cave on its flank has black coral. Almaco jacks and yellowmouth barracudas pass along the reef, and common stingrays lie on the sand at the bottom.
Lourenços is the advanced dive from Ponta Delgada: a reef about 2 nautical miles off the west of the island, 50 minutes by boat. Its top is at 24 metres, the bottom at 60, and the current can be strong. The guide lists it for Advanced Open Water divers only. In summer devil rays join the barracudas and jacks along the edges.
Caloura: three cave dives
The Caloura coast, by Água de Pau west of Vila Franca, has the island's cave dives. All three sites are 15 minutes from the Vila Franca marina and 30 to 35 from Ponta Delgada.
- Arcos da Caloura lies 300 metres out in a sheltered bay. The reef starts at 5 metres and drops to 20. At 16 metres is one of the four entrances to a cave where white trevallies and dusky groupers live and nudibranchs cover the ceiling. Listed for all divers and for snorkelling.
- Baixa das Castanhetas is less than 500 metres off the Caloura bathing area: a maze of caverns, tunnels and gorges. The first cavern, at 12 metres, has three wide entrances. The outer wall drops past 45 metres, and devil rays sometimes pass there. Listed for Open Water divers.
- Panela is about 100 metres off Água de Pau, and you can reach it from the shore as well as by boat. Its main cavern opens at 10 metres and goes down to 17, lit by two openings above you. The shallow parts, 5 to 10 metres, are good for snorkelling, but only when the sea is calm.
Around Vila Franca do Campo
Âncoras do Ilhéu is two minutes from the Vila Franca marina, on a 40-metre reef halfway between the shore and the islet. About a dozen ship's anchors lie on it, the oldest around 300 years old and the largest more than 2 metres long. The reef sits at 14 metres and the sand at 22. It is listed for Open Water divers and also used for night dives.
The islet itself is a marine reserve, and here the sources disagree. The regional diving guide lists Ilhéu de Vila Franca as a dive site for all levels, and Espírito Azul says it runs its try dives and snorkelling trips in the islet's reserve. The rules published by the islet's ferry operator, though, list scuba diving among the banned activities, with fines from €125. So do not dive there on your own; go with a centre and ask exactly where it takes you. Landing on the islet is a separate trip with its own tickets, covered in our guide to the Vila Franca islet.
Three more sites lie along the coast east of the town:
- Cabeços do Ilhéu, ten minutes out and less than a mile from the islet, is a reef with its top at about 25 metres and edges to 45. It has black coral, large dusky groupers and, in summer, devil rays, but also strong currents. Advanced Open Water only.
- Baixa do Frade is about 3 miles east of the marina near the Ponta Garça lighthouse. The top of the reef is 7 metres down, so snorkellers can use it too, and black coral grows from 14 metres, shallower than usual.
- Amora, between Ponta Garça and Ribeira Quente, has no rock formations at all: large pebbles on sand from 15 to 28 metres, with big groupers at the deep end.
Offshore: Formigas, Dollabarat and Ambrósio
The Formigas islets and the Dollabarat reef, about 40 miles off São Miguel, are among the best-known dives in the Azores, with large schools of pelagic fish, devil rays and sometimes sharks. Espírito Azul runs regular trips there and to Baixa do Ambrósio off Santa Maria from July to October. The boat takes about two hours each way, the trip needs at least five divers and good weather, and the centre wants to have dived with you before. Santa Maria is closer to these sites; our Santa Maria diving guide covers them from that side.
Who takes you out
The regional diving guide lists four dive centres in Ponta Delgada and two in Vila Franca do Campo. In Ponta Delgada: Açordiving in the Clube Naval building, Best Spot at kiosk B of the marina, Season Challenge at kiosks C and D of the Pêro de Teive marina, and Scubafish in the city. In Vila Franca: Azores Sub and Espírito Azul, both at the marina. Choose the harbour first: the Dori and Baixa do Espelho are a short ride from Ponta Delgada, while Caloura, the anchors and the reefs east of Vila Franca are closer to Vila Franca.
Espírito Azul's 2026 information sheet gives its routine: one dive at 9:00, back around 11:30, and one at 14:00, back around 16:30, so there is time for lunch in between. It asks for a 50% deposit when you book and takes the balance in cash only.

Espírito Azul's price page, as published in October 2026:

Water temperature
Average sea temperatures around São Miguel run from 16 °C in February and March to 24 °C in August, and stay at 22 to 23 °C in September and October. That warm stretch is also when the offshore trips run. Our São Miguel beaches guide has the full month-by-month table.
Safety and the decompression chamber
The eastern Azores' hyperbaric chamber is at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta Delgada, which also takes divers from Santa Maria. Its number is +351 296 203 000 (the diving guide prints 292, which is Faial's prefix). The hospital was badly damaged by a fire in May 2024 and its emergency department has worked from a modular building next door since September 2024. In an emergency call 112 and let the dive centre handle the transfer. Keep the deep sites, Lourenços and Cabeços do Ilhéu, for days when you are rested, and ask your centre how long to wait between your last dive and the flight home.
