Lagoa and Caloura, São Miguel: Cerâmica Vieira, the sea pools and the south coast

Half a day on the south coast east of Ponta Delgada: the hand-glazed pottery of Cerâmica Vieira, the three Lagoa bathing areas and their 2026 lifeguard seasons, Caloura's deep-water pool under a 15th-century convent, and a short trail past the island's first power stations.

Lagoa sits about 10 km east of Ponta Delgada on the south coast, and it is easy to drive straight past it on the way to Furnas or Vila Franca. That is a pity. Between Lagoa and Caloura there is a pottery that has glazed its earthenware by hand for more than 160 years, three supervised places to swim and a small harbour under a convent. The stretch makes a good half day, or a slow first afternoon after you land.

This guide covers what to see in Lagoa itself, where to swim and when the lifeguards are on duty, Caloura and its convent, and a short walk past the island's first power stations just over the municipal line.

Lagoa town: pottery and an old harbour

Lagoa became a municipality in 1522. In the 19th century it was known for ceramics and distilling, and the pottery carries on at Cerâmica Vieira, on Rua das Alminhas. When the regional broadcaster RTP Açores reported on it in December 2023, the company had just turned 161, and it still glazes its earthenware by hand. You can watch the pieces being thrown and painted, and buy them in the shop. The blue-painted pieces are the classic, and a small bowl packs into hand luggage.

The regional crafts register lists weekday hours with a lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00, closing at 17:00 in winter and 18:00 in summer, plus Saturday mornings. It is closed on Sundays. The listing carries no year, so phone 296 912 116 before a special trip.

Down at the water, the fishing harbour is Porto dos Carneiros. The name means "port of the sheep", after the livestock the first settlers landed in this sheltered cove. A few streets inland, the Church of Santa Cruz is older than its front suggests: the church was enlarged in the 1580s, and the façade and bell tower date from 1844.

With children, the Expolab science centre in Lagoa has an aquarium room, robots and a virtual-reality corner. Its opening hours were hard to pin down in 2026, so call +351 296 960 520 before you go.

Where to swim, and when the lifeguards are there

The municipality has three official bathing areas. Each has its own season, set every year by the regional government; the 2026 dates are below. Outside them there are no lifeguards, and an empty ladder in October is your own risk.

  • Piscinas Naturais da Lagoa, in town next to the harbour: 6 June to 6 September 2026.
  • Caloura, in the parish of Água de Pau: 6 June to 26 September 2026.
  • Baixa da Areia, also in Água de Pau: 4 July to 26 September 2026.

The Piscinas Naturais da Lagoa are the municipal pool complex. You get sea access from the rocks, a semi-Olympic seawater pool, children's pools, changing rooms, a bar with a terrace and a car park. This is the easy choice for families who want a pool deck and a toilet within reach.

Baixa da Areia is the only sand in the area, a beach of about 150 metres with some rounded stones. A stream comes out onto it, and the regional profile warns that pasture runoff can affect the water after heavy rain, so give it a day or two after a downpour.

All three were rated excellent for water quality in every official assessment from 2020 to 2023, and the Lagoa pools and Caloura held the Blue Flag every year from 2017 to 2024.

Caloura: the harbour, the pool and the convent

Caloura is a small harbour at the bottom of a cliff, about 11 km and a quarter of an hour by car east of Lagoa town. The bathing area is a rock pool with concrete steps. Beyond it you swim in open sea over basalt and boulders, and the regional profile rates the spot as highly exposed to the sea. The water is deep straight away. Nervous swimmers should stay in the pool or go to the town complex instead.

The regional profile puts parking at 100 cars and the average summer day at about 300 swimmers. On a hot weekend in August that is a lot of people for a small place, so come early in the morning or late in the afternoon. There is a snack bar at the harbour.

Above the harbour, the white Convent of Caloura goes back to a chapel attributed to around 1440. It closed as a religious house in 1832, was sold to a private family in 1854, and has been classified as a property of public interest since 2008. It is still private, so you see it from the road and from the water, not inside.

For the classic view, stop at the Miradouro do Pisão on the road above Caloura on your way down. It looks over walled vineyards and orchards to the harbour, the convent and the coast towards Vila Franca.

A short walk: the four light factories

Just east of Caloura, over the municipal line in Água d'Alto, the official trail PR39SMI Quatro Fábricas da Luz follows the Ribeira da Praia past the ruins of the power stations that first electrified São Miguel. It is 2.1 km, linear and easy, about an hour and a half, from the car park of the Parque Escutista dos Lagos.

On the way you pass the Fábrica da Vila (1899/1900 to 1972), the oldest of the four, and the Fábrica da Cidade (1904 to 1974). Two swimming holes, the Cascata do Segredo waterfall and the Poço dos 30 Reis, sit near the end of the walk. The last plant, the Fábrica da Praia (1911 to 1974), is now a small electricity museum, but it opens only by appointment with the power company EDA Renováveis (eda@eda.pt, +351 296 202 000), so book ahead if you want to go in.

The same car park is the start of PR02SMI, the only certified trail to the shore of Lagoa do Fogo: 10.2 km, graded medium, about four hours. In April and May gulls nest on the shore, and the trail page asks walkers to keep their distance. Our Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo guide covers the lake from the road.

One trail in the area was shut when we checked in October 2026: PR41SMI Rota da Água-Pedras Brancas, from Ribeira Chã to Água de Pau, carried a "closed trail" notice. Check the official trails site before you set off on any of them.

How to fit it into a day

With a car, a morning works like this: Cerâmica Vieira when it opens, the Miradouro do Pisão, then a swim at Caloura before the midday crowd, and lunch by the water. From Caloura it is about 11 km to Vila Franca do Campo, so the afternoon can continue east; our Vila Franca guide picks up from there.

Without a car, Lagoa town is a short taxi ride from Ponta Delgada, and one of the night bus circuits from the city runs out to Lagoa and Vila Franca. Caloura is harder; we could not get a current timetable for it, so ask at the bus station. Our guide to getting around São Miguel without a car has the operators.
