São Miguel with kids: beaches, hot pools, whales and what to skip
Planning São Miguel with children: why Água d'Alto is the beach for toddlers, the children's rules at Poça da Dona Beija (ages 2 to 6 €10, under-2s free, swim nappies) and Terra Nostra (€14.50, 30 minutes in water up to 42 °C), Gruta do Carvão for a grey morning, whale watching from age 6 on zodiacs or younger on a catamaran, the child-seat rule for hire cars, and which walks to leave out with a pushchair. Prices checked October 2026.
São Miguel works well with children once you have sorted out the sea, the hot pools and the driving. The island is bigger than it looks: Furnas is 45 to 50 minutes from Ponta Delgada each way, which is a lot for a three-year-old. Below: where to stay, which beach suits which age, the pool rules for children, a cave, the whale boats and the walks to leave for later. Prices and hours are as we found them in October 2026.
Where to base yourselves
Ponta Delgada is the easiest base. Praia do Pópulo is five minutes east by car, Praia das Milícias is a fifteen-minute bus ride from the centre, and the whale-watching boats leave from the marina. In town, the Jardim António Borges is a free garden with grotto passages, a duck pond and a playground. The grotto paths have steps, so leave the pushchair at the bottom. The gates close in the evening.
Furnas is worth one or two nights if your children like warm water, because Poça da Dona Beija and Terra Nostra are both in the village and you avoid the drive back after a long day.
You will need a hire car for most of what follows. Under article 55 of the Portuguese Highway Code, children up to 12 who are shorter than 135 cm must ride in an approved child seat, in the back. Order the seats with the car and check the size when you collect it.
Beaches by age
For toddlers, drive to Água d'Alto, west of Vila Franca do Campo. The bay is sheltered from most southerly swell and the water stays shallow a long way out. There is a bar at each end and a proper car park.
Praia do Pópulo is the nearest real beach to Ponta Delgada. Use the western end, in front of the bars, which is the sheltered half. The sand shelves fairly quickly and the waves come straight in, so watch the flags. Praia das Milícias is wider but nearly always windy, because it is the island's kitesurfing beach.
The municipal pool complex in Lagoa has separate children's pools next to the sea pools, which is useful on a day when the sea is rough. Two places to skip with non-swimmers: Caloura, which has no sand and is deep from the first ladder, and Praia dos Moinhos near Porto Formoso, a small cove reached by a steep lane with steps.
Lifeguards work only in the bathing season. Outside it, the beaches and pools have nobody on duty.
The hot pools and children
The two pools in Furnas have different rules, and the water in both is hot.
Poça da Dona Beija has small pools around 39 °C, open every day from 8:30 to 23:00. In 2026 adults pay €12 before 17:30 and €16 from 18:00. Children aged 2 to 6 pay €10 and €14, and the pools ask for ID for that rate. Under-2s are free. Babies must wear a swim nappy, which the shop sells, and the pools suggest you ask a paediatrician before a baby goes into thermal water. Children must be with an adult. Tickets are sold online only.
Parque Terra Nostra charges €17 for adults and €14.50 for children and seniors in 2026, and the garden is included. The big pool is 42 °C where the water comes in and about 36 °C at the far end. The jacuzzis run at 39 to 40 °C. The park's rule is 30 minutes in the water for everyone; with small children, make it shorter and keep them at the cooler end. The iron in the water stains light swimsuits orange. The main garden paths are fine with a pushchair.
At the steaming caldeiras by Lagoa das Furnas, non-residents pay €3 and children under 12 are free. The water in the vents is between 64 and 96 °C, so hold small hands and stay behind the barriers. Next to the lake, the Centro de Monitorização e Investigação das Furnas explains the volcano with models and interactive displays. It is listed for 2026 at €3 for adults, €1 for ages 7 to 14 and free under 7, and closed on Sundays and Mondays from November to March.
A cave in Ponta Delgada
Gruta do Carvão is a lava tube inside the city, on Rua do Paim. It is a good choice for a grey morning. Visits are guided, at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30, with limited places, so book. The byAçores listing, last updated in October 2024, gives adults at €5, children 6 to 12 at €1.50 and under-5s free. Check before you go.
Whale watching with children
The boats leave from Ponta Delgada. Futurismo, one of the main operators, charges €70 per adult plus a €4.20 online fee in 2026. Children 6 to 12 pay half and under-6s go free. The trip takes about three hours including the safety briefing. The minimum age on its zodiacs is 6. For younger children, book a catamaran, which is steadier and has a toilet on board. If anyone in the family gets seasick, the catamaran is the better choice anyway.
Walks that work and walks to skip
At Sete Cidades, the Boca do Inferno viewpoint walk is fine for children who can manage about 3 km, but not with a pushchair: the last part is a narrow path with wooden steps and steep drops on both sides. With a pushchair, stop at Vista do Rei, which is flat and next to the car park, then go down to the village, where there is a playground by the church.
The Lagoa do Fogo shuttle runs only in August and September and at Easter. In 2026 it cost €8 for non-resident adults and €4 for children 7 to 12, and was free for children up to 6. Outside those dates you can drive up to the viewpoints yourself.
Rainy days
Rain does not close the hot pools; Poça da Dona Beija stays open and only clears the pools in a thunderstorm. Gruta do Carvão is the same in any weather. The Augusto Arruda pineapple greenhouses in Fajã de Baixo, five minutes from the centre, are free and open every day. In Ribeira Grande, the Arquipélago arts centre is free for children 14 and under.
