Practical essentials on São Miguel: hospital, pharmacies, fuel and the health line
How the Ponta Delgada hospital has worked since the May 2024 fire, the private walk-in service in Lagoa and its October 2026 hours, the Azores health line, the six health centres and the village posts near Furnas and Sete Cidades, where the pharmacies are, and Repsol's 2026 fuel hours and price cap.
On São Miguel you rarely have to plan around services. The island has the largest hospital in the Azores, a private hospital with a walk-in service, 36 pharmacies and pharmacy branches on the official register, and fuel stations from Ponta Delgada to Nordeste. Before you arrive, it helps to know what is near Furnas, Sete Cidades and the far east, and how the main hospital has worked since its fire in 2024.
In an emergency
Call 112, the European emergency number. It works in the Azores as anywhere else in the EU.
The public hospital is the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) on Avenida D. Manuel I in Ponta Delgada, main line +351 296 203 000. A fire on 4 May 2024 closed its emergency department, delivery suite and operating theatres. A modular hospital was built beside the main building, and its emergency department opened on 3 September 2024. By February 2025 the hospital said it was again providing all the care it offered before the fire, though spread over several buildings. In May 2026 the old emergency area was still out of use, and the hospital board said it was too early to give a date for the rebuild. If you are sent to the hospital, expect to be directed to the modular building next to the main one.
When it is not an emergency
The Azores health line, Linha Saúde Açores, is 808 24 60 24. During the 2024 hospital crisis the regional health service asked people to call it before going to an urgent-care unit, and it is still the number to try first when you are not sure where to go.
At that time, in May 2024, the health centres in Nordeste, Povoação, Ribeira Grande and Vila Franca do Campo each ran a basic urgent-care unit open 24 hours. We could not confirm that this still holds in 2026, so phone first.
The private option is Hospital CUF Açores in Lagoa at Alameda do Conhecimento 3. Its walk-in service in October 2026 sees adults every day from 08:00 to 22:00 and children on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00, with no paediatric service at weekends or on public holidays. It is private, so you pay its price list or claim on your insurance. Parking is free.
Health centres near where you are staying
The regional government's health register lists six health centres, one in each municipality:
- Ponta Delgada: Rua Conselheiro Dr. Luís Bettencourt Medeiros e Câmara 26-28, phone +351 296 205 260.
- Lagoa: Rua Francisco Amaral de Almeida 4, phone +351 296 960 280.
- Ribeira Grande: Rua de São Francisco, phone +351 296 470 500.
- Vila Franca do Campo: Rua Teófilo de Braga 91, phone +351 296 539 420.
- Povoação: Rua Monsenhor João Maurício Amaral Ferreira, phone +351 296 550 150.
- Nordeste: on the regional road, phone +351 296 480 090.
The same register lists about thirty smaller health posts in the villages. Those that matter to visitors have a GP as well as a nurse: Furnas (+351 296 584 224), Sete Cidades (+351 296 295 930), Mosteiros (+351 296 950 010) and Ribeira Quente (+351 296 584 278). They serve local patients first, but for a dressing or a check on a sprained ankle one may be nearer than a town. We could not find opening hours for any of them.
Pharmacies
The register lists 36 pharmacies and smaller pharmacy branches. In central Ponta Delgada there are seven within a few streets of each other, among them Farmácia Popular on Rua Machado dos Santos (+351 296 205 530), Farmácia Central on Rua Marquês da Praia e Monforte (+351 296 284 151), Farmácia Garcia on Largo 2 de Março (+351 296 306 370) and Farmácia Moderna on Largo de Camões (+351 296 305 780). Farmácia Costa is in the Parque Atlântico shopping centre.
Outside the city:
- Ribeira Grande: Farmácia Central da Ribeira Grande on Largo de São Francisco (+351 296 473 135) and the Santa Casa pharmacy on Rua de São Francisco.
- Lagoa: Farmácia Santa Cruz and Farmácia Mântua.
- Vila Franca do Campo: Farmácia Amaral (+351 296 582 292).
- Povoação: the Santa Casa pharmacy on Rua Barão das Laranjeiras (+351 296 585 115).
- Nordeste: the Santa Casa pharmacy on Praça da República (+351 296 488 276).
- Furnas: a small pharmacy branch on Rua Vasco Bensaúde (+351 296 584 427).
- West coast: small branches in Mosteiros (+351 296 915 466) and Ginetes (+351 296 295 250).
The register lists nothing in Sete Cidades, so buy what you need in Ponta Delgada before a day in the crater. The register also lists shops selling medicines that need no prescription, including one at the airport and one in the Portas do Mar complex on the Ponta Delgada seafront.
The register has not been revised in some years, so check what is open when you arrive, and ask at any pharmacy which one is covering nights and Sundays. If you take a regular prescription, bring the full supply and a copy of the prescription.
Fuel
Fuel prices in the Azores are capped by the regional government and change monthly. From 1 October 2026 the maximum was €1.924 a litre for 95 unleaded and €1.939 for diesel.
Repsol alone lists seven stations in Ponta Delgada and one each in Lagoa, Ribeira Grande, Furnas, Povoação and Nordeste. The hours it gave in October 2026 are the same seven days a week, which matters on a Sunday:
- Ponta Delgada, Caminho da Levada 149: 07:00 to 23:00.
- Ponta Delgada, Rua Nossa Senhora da Ajuda 215: 06:00 to 21:00.
- Lagoa, Avenida Infante D. Henrique 44: 07:30 to 21:00.
- Ribeira Grande, regional road at Ribeira Seca: 07:00 to 23:00.
- Furnas, on the EN1-1A: 07:00 to 22:00.
- Povoação, Rua Dr. Travassos Lima 18: 07:30 to 20:00.
- Nordeste, regional road at Feteira Grande: 07:00 to 23:00.
Other brands are not included here. Of these seven, the earliest to close is Povoação, at 20:00, which is the one you may be counting on at the end of a long day in the east. Fill up before you leave Ponta Delgada or Ribeira Grande for the Nordeste loop. Repsol's pages also mention electric charging "subject to availability", so if you hire an electric car, ask the rental firm where its cars are charged. Our guide to driving on São Miguel covers car hire and the road rules, and getting around without a car has the buses and taxis.
A short checklist
- Travel insurance that covers medical treatment, and the European Health Insurance Card if you have one.
- The health line, 808 24 60 24, saved in your phone next to 112.
- Your full supply of any regular medicine, with the prescription.
- Anything you need from a pharmacy bought before a day in Sete Cidades.
- A full tank before the east, and back past Povoação before 20:00 if you are counting on its station.
Quick answers
Is the hospital in Ponta Delgada open after the 2024 fire?
Yes. Since September 2024 its emergency department has worked from a modular building beside the main hospital on Avenida D. Manuel I, and the hospital said in February 2025 that all its services were running again. In May 2026 the old emergency area was still closed for rebuilding, with no date set.
Is there a private hospital on São Miguel?
Hospital CUF Açores in Lagoa. In October 2026 its walk-in service saw adults daily from 08:00 to 22:00 and children on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00. You pay its own prices.
Is there a pharmacy in Furnas or Sete Cidades?
Furnas has a small pharmacy branch on Rua Vasco Bensaúde. The register lists none in Sete Cidades; the nearest are in Ginetes and Mosteiros on the west coast, or in Ponta Delgada.
What number do I call for medical advice?
112 in an emergency. For anything else, the Azores health line on 808 24 60 24, or the health centre of the municipality you are in.
