On São Miguel you choose the stream before the company. Ribeira dos Caldeirões near Nordeste is the beginners' canyon, with 6 to 8-metre abseils for €67.50 to €68.90 and a child price from age 6; Salto do Cabrito near Ribeira Grande has 15 or 25-metre drops for €74.20 to €87.50; Lombadas, Ribeira da Salga and the full day at Água de Alto (€280, 45 metres) are for a second trip. October 2026 prices from Picos de Aventura and Azores Adventure Islands, what Futurismo offers, what is included, and the cancellation rules.

On São Miguel the first question is not which company to book but which stream. A morning at Ribeira dos Caldeirões in the north-east means jumps, a natural slide and an abseil of 6 to 8 metres. A few euros more at Salto do Cabrito near Ribeira Grande gets you a 15 or 25-metre drop beside a waterfall. Further up the scale are a 50-metre abseil at Lombadas and a full day in the Ribeira da Praia gorge near Água de Alto with a 45-metre top drop. This guide sets the trips side by side with the prices the operators listed in October 2026, so you can pick the descent that matches what you can handle.

Visit Azores lists canyoning on three islands, São Miguel, São Jorge and Flores, and says each has its own kind of route. On São Miguel the guided trips use a handful of streams. The two that both Picos de Aventura and Azores Adventure Islands run are Ribeira dos Caldeirões and Salto do Cabrito.

Ribeira dos Caldeirões: the easy one

The stream runs through the Ribeira dos Caldeirões park at Achada, in the municipality of Nordeste, a valley of old water mills that the regional tourism board describes as an open-air museum. It is the gentlest of the trips below, with a short walk in, small jumps and the lowest abseils.

  • Picos de Aventura charges €68.90 per adult (12 and over) and €34.45 for children aged 6 to 11, for about three hours. With transport the prices are €84.80 and €42.40. Equipment is handed out at the park, then a walk of about 20 minutes takes you to the stream. The biggest waterfall is 8 metres and you abseil it; some obstacles you jump instead.
  • Azores Adventure Islands sells the same stream as its "Canyoning Experience" at €67.50 per person, three hours, rated easy to medium. Its main description gives 6 metres as both the highest abseil (optional) and the highest jump. The group meets at the park, and a hotel pick-up costs €20 per person.

The park is in the far north-east of the island, so a morning here combines well with an afternoon on the east coast; the Nordeste and Povoação guide has the drive times and viewpoints.

Salto do Cabrito: a bigger waterfall near Ribeira Grande

Salto do Cabrito is a waterfall above Ribeira Grande on the north coast. The approach passes an old hydroelectric power station, and Azores Adventure Islands mentions volcanic fumaroles on the way in as well.

  • Picos de Aventura runs a three-hour trip at €74.20 per adult, or €90.10 with transport. After a walk of about 15 minutes there are three waterfalls, each abseiled, the highest 15 metres.
  • Azores Adventure Islands runs a five-hour version at €87.50 per person, rated medium, which ends with a 25-metre abseil at Salto do Cabrito itself. The highest jump is 3 metres. It meets at the Salto do Cabrito car park, with two guides.

If you only want to see the waterfall, you do not need a harness. The official trail PRC29SMI, Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande - Salto do Cabrito, is an 8.6 km circuit of about three hours, rated medium. The Ribeira Grande guide covers the town and the Caldeiras where it starts, and hiking on São Miguel compares it with the other official trails.

Lombadas, Ribeira da Salga and Água de Alto: for a second trip

Azores Adventure Islands also guides three harder descents. Prices are per person as listed in October 2026:

  • Jump and Slide, Ribeira da Salga, €90 for five hours, medium to high. The highest abseil is 15 metres, but the reason to book it is the 12-metre top jump and a water slide. It meets at the parish council building in Lomba de São Pedro.
  • Waterfall canyoning at Lombadas, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, €100 for three hours, medium to high, with a 50-metre abseil and jumps of no more than 2 metres. It meets at Vale das Lombadas.
  • Extreme canyoning in the Ribeira da Praia near Água de Alto, €280 for six to eight hours, rated high to very high. The walk in alone takes about an hour and a half, the highest abseil is 45 metres, and a light meal is included. It meets at Tanques de Água d'Alto. The company calls it a demanding physical and technical day, so book it only if you have already done a few descents.

The third company, and what the prices include

Futurismo also offers canyoning on São Miguel but publishes no prices; ask at info@futurismo.pt or +351 296 628 522. Its FAQ says the activity runs all year, with more water in the streams in winter, that first-timers are welcome, and that swimming is recommended but not required. Tell your guide if you cannot swim.

Azores Adventure Islands includes the wetsuit and neoprene socks, canyoning boots, helmet, harness, guides, photos and insurance. Picos de Aventura's pages mention the equipment and the safety briefing without listing the items, so ask what is provided. Azores Adventure Islands tells you to bring swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, water and flip-flops. Its harnesses fit people between 1.20 and 2.10 metres tall and between 20 and 120 kilograms, with a waist of no more than 1.40 metres, so check those numbers before you book for a child or a large adult. Groups are two to seven people per guide, and at most 14 together.

Azores Adventure Islands' overview page shows lower "from" prices than its trip pages: €58.19 for the Caldeirões trip against €67.50. The prices in this guide are the trip-page ones, so compare like with like.

Which trip to book

If you have never abseiled, start at Ribeira dos Caldeirões with either company. For children, Picos de Aventura is the one with a child price, from age 6.

If you are fit and fine with heights, Salto do Cabrito is the natural step up. Book the three-hour version for a single 15-metre drop, or the five-hour one for the 25-metre finish. Ribeira da Salga is for people who come for the jumps.

Lombadas and Água de Alto are second or third trips. The 50-metre abseil at Lombadas fits in three hours; Água de Alto is a full day.

Weather and cancellation

Azores Adventure Islands may change or cancel a trip for bad weather or safety reasons and refunds in full when it does. Picos de Aventura refunds in full if you cancel 24 hours or more ahead, keeps 50% inside 24 hours and charges in full for a no-show. Futurismo refunds in full if you cancel at least 48 hours before. Heavy rain upstream can call off a descent at short notice, so book canyoning early in your stay and leave a free day after it.

None of the three companies states a minimum age on the pages we read, apart from Picos de Aventura's child price from 6. If you are booking for teenagers, ask first.
