Where to stay on Flores: Santa Cruz, Fajã Grande or Lajes, the three hotels, rentals and campsites

Flores has three hotels, all in Santa Cruz by the runway, and most of its 107 licensed rentals are in the west, around half of them in Fajã Grande. What each base has, how far it leaves you from the rest of the island, the five campsites, and when to book.

Flores has very few beds, and the place you book decides how much driving you will do. The island's three hotels are all in Santa Cruz, on the east coast, a short walk from the runway. Most of the holiday houses are on the west coast in Fajã Grande, where the waterfalls and the trails are. Below is what each place has, how far each base leaves you from the rest of the island, and how camping works.

How much there is

The regional tourism office keeps a register of licensed local accommodation (alojamento local). Its list for Flores, last updated in January 2022, has 107 establishments with 579 beds between them. That is the whole island's private stock, and 81 of its 133 units are whole houses. There is no hostel on the list.

The beds are not spread evenly. Of the 107 establishments, 83 are in the municipality of Lajes das Flores, which covers the west and south: Fajã Grande, Fajãzinha, Lajedo, Lomba, Fazenda and Lajes itself. Around half of those 83 give a Fajã Grande address. The municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores has only 24, but it has all three hotels.

Visit Azores, the regional tourism site, lists ten places to stay on Flores. Explore Flores, the island's visitor site, adds a few rural houses and five campsites. The register is from 2022, so treat its numbers as a guide to the pattern rather than a current count.

Santa Cruz das Flores: the hotels, the airport and the Corvo boat

Santa Cruz is the island's main town. The airport runway runs along its edge, and the boat to Corvo leaves from here. If you have an early flight, a short stay or a Corvo day trip planned, sleep here.

  • The Ocean Cliff Hotel sits on the Boqueirão headland, about 400 metres from the airport. Visit Azores lists it as a four-star hotel with 26 units and 52 beds, including one suite and one room adapted for guests with reduced mobility. It has a restaurant, a bar, a small gym and an outdoor pool. Older booking pages may still call it Inatel Flores or Hotel das Flores.
  • Hotel Servi-Flor is in the town centre, about 500 metres from the airport and next to the natural pools. It has 32 rooms and one two-bedroom apartment, an outdoor pool, a minigolf course and a playground. The building went up in the late 1960s as the mess of the French military base.
  • Hotel Ocidental is on the Avenida dos Baleeiros, about 500 metres from the airport, with tidal pools beside it. Its old web address now leads to a domain-sale page, so book by phone (+351 292 590 100) or email, and confirm before you travel.
  • Hospedaria Melo rents studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments in the centre, a few steps from the pools.

The Altio natural pools on the Avenida dos Baleeiros have a lifeguard from mid-June to mid-September, the longest season on the island.

The cost of a Santa Cruz base is the drive west. By road, Fajã Grande is 22.4 km away, across the interior plateau. You will make that trip for every waterfall and most of the trails.

Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha: the walkers' base

Fajã Grande sits on a strip of flat land under the 300-metre western cliff. Three of the island's official trails, PR01FLO, PR02FLO and PR03FLO, end in the village, and Poço do Bacalhau is a short walk away. This is where most of the island's holiday rentals are, and most of them are small.

  • Aldeia da Cuada, between Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha, is a restored hamlet run as rural tourism. Visit Azores lists 17 units, from one-bedroom houses to a six-bedroom one, with a restaurant and a transfer service. Rates show only once you enter dates. Our guide to Aldeia da Cuada covers its history and the walk past it.
  • Argonauta is a guesthouse in a yellow building near the parish church, run by a resident owner since 1991. It has three en-suite rooms and two suites upstairs, and serves breakfast.
  • Self-catering is the norm. Two examples from the Visit Azores list: Palheiro da Assomada, a 30 m² cottage converted from a hay barn in 2014 that sleeps up to four, and Casa da Sogra, a three-bedroom house about 300 metres from the sea.

The bathing area at Fajã Grande has a lifeguard in July and August only. Fajãzinha, the next village south, had more than a dozen licensed houses of its own on the 2022 register.

The cost of a Fajã Grande base is the opposite drive: 22.4 km to the airport, the supermarkets and the Corvo boat. The village has few restaurants and small shops, so read our food guide before you arrive and stock up in Santa Cruz on the way in. Buses run on weekdays only, and the direct Santa Cruz to Fajã Grande line ran only in July and August, at 08:00 and 18:00, on the timetable UTC still linked in 2026.

Lajes das Flores and the south

Lajes, the seat of the southern municipality, and the villages around it (Lomba, Fazenda, Lajedo) have a scatter of licensed houses and apartments, but no hotel. Explore Flores lists two rural houses here, Casa da Cascata and Moinho da Cascata.

The south makes sense if you want quiet, a stone beach in a sheltered bay, or the Fajã de Lopo Vaz trail. Santa Cruz is 18.6 km away by road. It works as a compromise base, with less choice than the other two.

Camping

Explore Flores lists five campsites: at the Altio pools in Santa Cruz, at Alagoa and Ponta Delgada on the north coast, at Fajã Grande, and the leisure park at Lajes. It gives one phone number, +351 292 590 700, next to the Altio site.

We could not find 2026 seasons or prices for any of them from an official source. Phone the town hall in Santa Cruz das Flores or Lajes das Flores before you pack a tent. Camping elsewhere is restricted: our Nature Park rules guide explains where it is banned.

Booking

Book as soon as your flights are fixed if you are coming in July or August. Under 600 private beds and three hotels do not go far in high summer. Most places publish rates only once you choose dates, so you cannot compare them in advance.

Leave room for weather. Flights to Flores are often cancelled in bad weather, and a cancelled flight out means another night. Book a room you can extend, or keep the last night in Santa Cruz, close to the airport.

For four nights or more, splitting the stay works well: west coast first, Santa Cruz last. Our getting to Flores guide has more on how many days to plan.

Quick answers

What is the best area to stay on Flores? Fajã Grande for walking and the waterfalls; Santa Cruz for the airport, the hotels and a day trip to Corvo. For a longer stay, split it between the two.

How many hotels are there on Flores? Three, all in Santa Cruz das Flores: the Ocean Cliff, the Servi-Flor and the Ocidental. Everything else is a rental house, an apartment, a guesthouse or rural tourism.

Is there a hostel on Flores? The 2022 regional register lists none. Look at guesthouse rooms or a small studio instead.

Can I camp on Flores? Yes, at the designated sites. Explore Flores lists five; check the season and the price with the town hall before you go.

Aldeia da Cuada, between Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha on the west coast of Flores, dates from 1676 and had 122 people in 20 stone houses in the early 19th century. Its families left for America in the 1960s; Teotónia and Carlos Silva rebuilt it as one rural tourism business with 16 or 17 houses and a restaurant. What its history page records, why there are no published rates, whether you can walk the lanes, the PR02FLO trail past it, and the weekday bus with its 2026 fare.
