Getting to Flores: flights, weather delays and how many days to plan

The decision with Flores is how many days to give it, and the answer depends less on what there is to see than on how you get off the island again. You arrive by air, on a small turboprop onto a short runway, and weather is the main reason flights in the Azores are cancelled. Plan for the flight you might lose, and Flores is an easy island to enjoy. Plan it tight, and one windy morning can cost you a connection home.

Until 2020 the regional ferry company, Atlânticoline, ran a large summer operation that linked practically every island, Flores included. It has been suspended since then, and in summer 2026 its sailings stay inside the central group, plus one line in the west between Flores and Corvo. The company's own timetable lists Santa Cruz as the only port on Flores, and Corvo as its only connection.

So the way in is SATA Air Açores, the inter-island airline. Flores Airport is in Santa Cruz das Flores, with a single runway of 1,400 metres, and takes direct flights from four places:

• Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, about 1 hour 20.
• Terceira, about 1 hour 5.
• Horta on Faial, about 50 minutes.
• Corvo, the small island next door.

Those times come from a sample day in September 2026, when Flores had five departures: two to Ponta Delgada, two to Horta and one to Terceira, all on Dash 8 turboprops. Frequencies change by season and by day of the week, so check the current schedule on azoresairlines.pt before you build the rest of the trip around it.

If you are coming from mainland Europe or North America, you fly first into Ponta Delgada or Terceira and connect. Horta is the natural choice if you are combining Flores with Faial, Pico or São Jorge.

Across its whole network, SATA Air Açores cancelled 1,351 flights between May 2025 and April 2026. According to the figures reported in May 2026, 57 percent of those were for weather, 26 percent for technical reasons and 15 percent operational. Counting the operational cancellations that were knock-on effects of weather, the share linked to weather reached 68 percent.

What that means on Flores:

• A cancellation usually costs a day or two rather than a week. In the March 2026 storm, passengers were rebooked onto flights over the following two days, weather permitting.
• With only a handful of flights a day, the next free seat may not be on the next plane.
• The cost falls on whatever comes after Flores. A lost day on the island is annoying; a missed long-haul flight from Ponta Delgada or Lisbon is expensive.

If the airline cancels, you are covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, which gives you a right to assistance. If you change the flight yourself ahead of forecast bad weather, the airline treats it as a voluntary change, and that right to assistance does not apply.

The practical rule is to leave at least one full day between your last flight out of Flores and anything you cannot move, such as an international departure. Two days is safer outside summer.

The seasonal difference is large. At Flores Airport the long-term average is about 8 rainy days in July and about 18 in December, with roughly 205 hours of sunshine in July against 65 in December. The winter half of the year is wetter and darker, and that is when a buffer is most likely to be used.

The easiest way to hold a buffer is to put Flores in the middle of your route, not at the end. Fly São Miguel to Flores, then Flores to Horta or Terceira, and the extra day becomes part of the next island if you do not need it.

Flores is small: 16.6 km long and 12.2 km wide. Distance hardly matters. The weather sets the pace, because the waterfalls and the crater lakes each need a clear-ish day, and the long trails need a dry one.

• Three nights is the minimum that makes the flight worthwhile. That gives you one day for the waterfalls and lakes, one day for a walk, and a spare half day.
• Four or five nights is the comfortable version, with room to swap days around the forecast and to add a day trip to Corvo.
• Add the buffer on top of that if Flores is the last island before your flight home.

The only ferry from Flores goes to Corvo, 17.9 km away, from the harbour in Santa Cruz. The crossing takes about 40 minutes. The boat carries 12 passengers, the crossing depends on the sea, and in summer the boat is heavily booked, so book about a week ahead through atlanticoline.pt. It does not sail every day; in late September 2026 the timetable showed sailings on some days and none on others. Check the dates before you promise yourself a day trip.

You will want a car. Rental firms have desks at the airport, and two main roads do most of the work: the ER 1-2 around the coast and the ER 2-2 across the interior past the lakes.

The bus is thin. UTC runs three lines on the island with two to four trips a day on each, and as of 2023 there was no service at weekends or on public holidays. It works for a single fixed trip on a weekday, not for sightseeing.

Where you sleep depends on what you came for.

• Santa Cruz das Flores is the main town. The airport and the Corvo boat are both here, and so are the town pools at Altio, a monitored bathing water from mid-June to mid-September. It is the practical choice for a short stay, an early flight or a Corvo day trip. The trade-off is that the waterfalls and the western trails are on the other side of the island.
• Fajã Grande sits on the west coast under the 300-metre cliff, close to Poço do Bacalhau and Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro. Three of the island's official trails end in the village, and it has a lifeguarded bathing area in July and August. It is the base for walkers. The trade-off is the drive back across the island for every flight.
• Lajes das Flores, the seat of the southern municipality, has the island's main commercial port and a stone beach in a bay sheltered from northerly weather. It suits a stay built around the south coast and the Fajã de Lopo Vaz trail.

For four nights or more, splitting the stay works well: two nights in Fajã Grande for the west, and the last night in Santa Cruz so that the airport is minutes away on the morning you leave.

Is there a ferry to Flores from the other Azores islands?

No. Atlânticoline suspended its large summer operation in 2020, and in 2026 the only boat from Flores goes to Corvo. You reach Flores by air.

Where can I fly to Flores from?

How many days should I spend on Flores?

Three nights at the very least, and four or five if you want to walk and see the waterfalls and lakes without racing the weather. Keep a spare day before any international flight.
