What to do when it is not calm
- Heavy rain closes the trails and the mountain roads. Pick a coastal walk on the sheltered side, a museum or the hot springs at Furnas, and do not drive the high passes.
- A gale means diversions and cancelled island hops: planes land on another island and come back hours later. Check your flight before you leave the hotel, and allow extra time for the airport bus.
- An orange sea warning means no swimming and closed promenades, including the natural pools. Stay well back from the rocks: rogue waves take people off them every winter.
