Golf on Terceira: the course at Fajãs da Agualva, green fees, booking and tournaments
Terceira's only golf course, founded in 1954: 18 holes, par 72, lakes and hydrangeas at Fajãs da Agualva. What a round cost in 2026, how to book a tee time when the club publishes no prices, the handicap certificate, the €30 beginner session, and the 2026 tournament dates to plan around.
Terceira has one golf course, and it is one of the oldest in Portugal. The Clube de Golfe da Ilha Terceira was founded in 1954 and plays over 18 holes inland, at Fajãs da Agualva, a few kilometres from both Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória. If you are bringing clubs to the Azores, it is worth a morning: a mature parkland course with lakes and hydrangeas. The catch is practical. The club publishes no prices and we found no online tee-time booking, so you arrange a tee time by phone or email. This guide covers the course, what it costs, how to book, and when the club calendar can take the course off the table.
The course
The figures, as Visit Azores lists them: 18 holes, par 72, 5,695 metres from the back tees, layout by K. K. Design. Portugal's national tourism board gives the opening as 1954 and a second date, 2005, and credits the design to architects of the United States Air Force together with K. K. Design. The airfield at Lajes, a short drive north-east, has hosted an American detachment since the Second World War, and the tourism board still describes the club as run by three parties: the Azores regional government, the Azores Air Zone of the Portuguese air force, and the American command.
It is a parkland course. Tall trees line the fairways, hydrangeas and azaleas flower along them in summer, and several small lakes come into play. The tourism board picks out three holes:
- The 10th, a par 4 that crosses a ravine, with water right in front of the green.
- The 17th, a long par 5 where water again guards the approach.
- The 18th, a par 3 to a steeply sloping green protected by a lake, and the hardest hole on the card. The club's own competitions give a prize for the shot closest to the pin here.
There are several tees per hole, so higher handicaps can play it shorter.
What is there besides the course
According to the national tourism board, the club has a driving range, a putting green and a chipping area, and hires out clubs, trolleys and buggies. There is a pro shop, individual lessons, and a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant. The clubhouse also has meeting rooms for up to 220 people and a slot-machine room, so it doubles as an events venue.
Green fees and how to book
The club does not publish its rates. In October 2026 golf directories quoted €50 for 18 holes, the same price on weekdays and weekends, and noted that the course is open all year. Treat that as a guide and confirm the price when you book, together with the cost of club and buggy hire.
Book through the pro shop. The club gives +351 295 902 444 for availability and bookings, and the email reservas@terceiragolf.com. The directories also say you need a valid handicap certificate from your home club. Bring it, or a recent print of your handicap record.
If you have never played, the island's tourism booking site listed an "Intro to golf" session with the club in October 2026 from €30 per person, equipment included. It covers the swing, putting and the short game, then free practice on the range.
When the course is busy
The club runs a full competition calendar, so check the date before you plan a round around it. The tournaments the club listed for 2026:
- Club Open, 1 March
- Terceira Open, 9 May
- Melhor dos Melhores, 30 May
- Club Championship, 10 June
- Taça CGIT, 25 July
- Festas da Agualva tournament, 15 August
- The 43rd ProAm, 7 to 10 October, with a practice round on the 7th, the ProAm on the 8th and the professional and amateur competitions on the 9th and 10th
The autumn ends with the chestnut, turkey and Christmas tournaments; in 2025 they fell on 1 November, 29 November and 13 December. Check the "Atividade Desportiva" page on terceiragolf.com, or ask when you call.
Some club competitions are open to visitors. For the 2024 Club Open, players had to hold a valid WHS handicap certified by their home club and be registered with the Portuguese Golf Federation, though the committee could let others play outside the competition. Entry was €15 for members and €25 for non-members. That April event was played under winter rules, with preferred lies on the fairway.
Getting there and fitting it in
The course is inland in the parish of Agualva, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória. Its postal address is Fajãs da Agualva, 9760-909 Praia da Vitória. You need a car or a taxi; our guide to getting around Terceira covers both, including taxis from Lajes airport.
A round fits into a morning, which leaves the afternoon free. The caves in the centre of the island open only in the afternoon, and from October to March only on some days; our caves guide has the hours. If the weather turns on the course, the rainy-day guide lists what is open indoors.
The other two courses in the Azores, Batalha and Furnas, are both on São Miguel; if you want more than one course, plan the trip around both islands. For the weather month by month, see our guide to the best time to visit Terceira.
