Best time to visit Terceira: weather by month, festivals and crowds
June to September suits most visitors to Terceira: warm sea, lifeguards from 15 June to 15 September (2026), and the Sanjoaninas and Festas da Praia. Angra's 1991-2020 climate normals month by month, sea temperature, the 2026 festival dates, the rope-bullfight and Holy Spirit seasons, cave opening patterns, and official overnight-stay figures for August and September 2025.
For most visitors the best time on Terceira is from June to September. That is when the sea is warm enough to swim, the beaches have lifeguards and the island holds its two big summer festivals: the Sanjoaninas in Angra in late June and the Festas da Praia in Praia da Vitória around the start of August. September is the quieter half of that window, with the sea still at about 23 °C. From October to April the island stays mild but wetter, which suits walking, the caves and the Holy Spirit chapels more than the beach.
The weather month by month
The official climate normals for Angra do Heroísmo, measured at 90 metres between 1991 and 2020, give the range:
- January: average high 16.6 °C, low 12.5 °C, 103 mm of rain on about 13 days
- March: 16.7 °C and 12.2 °C, 105 mm on about 12 days
- May: 19.1 °C and 14.2 °C, 77 mm on about 8 days
- June: 21.5 °C and 16.4 °C, 51 mm on about 6 days
- July: 24.2 °C and 18.6 °C, 27 mm on about 5 days, the driest month
- August: 25.5 °C and 19.7 °C, 41 mm on about 6 days, the warmest month
- September: 24.2 °C and 18.9 °C, 84 mm on about 8 days
- October: 21.6 °C and 16.8 °C, 116 mm on about 13 days
- December: 17.4 °C and 13.2 °C, 154 mm on about 15 days, the wettest month
The spread is narrow. February nights average 11.9 °C, and in thirty years of records the station averaged no days at all at 30 °C or above. August is the only month where most days reach 25 °C (about 20 of them). So temperature rarely decides a trip. Rain does: December brings more than five times the rain of July, on three times as many days.
These are coastal figures from Angra. The middle of the island is several hundred metres higher and cooler, so take a jacket to the caves and the viewpoints, and keep a viewpoint day flexible for the first clear morning.
Sea temperature and the beach season
The sea off Angra is coldest in February and March, at about 16 °C, and warmest in August, at about 24 °C. It is still about 23 °C in September and 21 °C in October, so the water in early autumn is warmer than in June (about 19 °C).
Lifeguards work only during the official bathing season. In 2026 every listed bathing spot on Terceira had the same season, 15 June to 15 September: Praia Grande and Prainha in Praia da Vitória, the Biscoitos pools, Silveira and Negrito near Angra, Salga, Porto Martins and the rest. Outside those dates you can swim, but nobody is watching the water, and the Biscoitos pools close when a northerly swell comes in. For a trip built around swimming, aim for July to mid-September.
Festivals worth planning around
The Sanjoaninas are Angra's festival for São João. In 2026 they ran from 19 to 28 June with free entry, and the town council calls them the largest festivities in the Azores. Expect marchas in the streets, bullfights in the bullring and touradas à corda on the town's edge. If your dates overlap, book your room early.
The Festas da Praia fill Praia da Vitória at the turn of July and August. In 2026 they ran from 31 July to 9 August, with concerts, a food fair and a bullfighting programme. Both festivals publish a new programme every year: check the council websites once it is out.
Two traditions run through a longer season. Touradas à corda, the rope bullfights held in village streets, are allowed by regional law from 1 May to 15 October. In July 2025 the Angra council listed 48 of them for its own municipality alone. The Holy Spirit festivals start the Sunday after Easter and peak at Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, which in 2027 fall on 16 and 23 May. On Terceira the cycle goes on through the summer and ends with the Império de São Carlos in Angra at the end of September.
Caves and opening hours
Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal, the two show caves in the middle of the island, keep longer hours in summer. Under the operator's standard calendar they open every afternoon from June to September (14:00 to 18:00), every afternoon with shorter hours in April and May, and only four afternoons a week from October to March. That table is labelled 2023, and in 2026 Algar do Carvão reopened on reduced days after building works, so check the Os Montanheiros website before you drive up in the low season.
Crowds
Terceira is the second busiest island in the Azores, a long way behind São Miguel. In August 2025 hotels and other licensed accommodation on Terceira logged 87,900 overnight stays, against 419,400 on São Miguel. In September 2025 the figure on Terceira was 61,000, almost a third fewer than in August. Both figures were slightly down on the year before. The weeks that need booking ahead are the festival weeks: reserve the room and the hire car early for late June and early August.
Which month to choose
For swimming and festivals, go from late June to early September, and book ahead for the Sanjoaninas or the Festas da Praia. For a quieter summer with warm water, choose the first half of September, before the lifeguards go home on the 15th. For walking, May and June work well: mild, green and much drier than winter, and the main months of the Holy Spirit festivals. October is still warm, with average highs of 21.6 °C, but about as wet as January. From November to March, come for the old town of Angra, the food and the caves on their open days, and pack a rain jacket.
