Where to stay on Santa Maria: Vila do Porto, Praia Formosa or a rural house

Without a car, stay in Vila do Porto: Hotel Colombo (87 rooms, 18 with kitchenettes), Hotel Santa Maria by the airport with a free transfer, and the youth hostel in an 18th-century house by the port. With one, try the Praia Formosa campsite bungalows in summer, a holiday home in São Lourenço or a rural house near Santa Bárbara. Buses, 2025 and 2026 prices and the Maré de Agosto week.

Santa Maria has one town, a handful of villages and not many beds. The choice comes down to two questions: will you have a car, and are you coming in summer or out of it? Without a car, stay in Vila do Porto. With one, the island is small enough that a house in the east or the north works fine, and that is where it is quietest.

Vila do Porto: the default

Vila do Porto is the only town, and it has the shops, the pharmacies, the harbour and most of the restaurants. The airport is on its western edge. It is also the only place where the island's buses are of any use. TSM route 3 runs from the harbour (Cais de Vila do Porto) out to Paul, past the Hotel de Santa Maria stop and the airport, roughly every hour on weekdays from 07:30 to 17:30, and on Saturday mornings only. The timetables show no Sunday service on any route. More on that in our guide to getting around Santa Maria.

Three established places to stay are here.

Hotel Colombo stands at the entrance to Vila do Porto. It was built in 2002 and has 87 rooms, of which 5 are suites and 18 are apartments with a living room, a balcony and a kitchenette. The apartments are the ones to ask for with a family or for a longer stay. There is a pool with a wooden deck and a bar terrace with a view of the sea. The hotel says it is ten minutes from the airport, from Pico Alto and from Praia Formosa.

Hotel Santa Maria is out by the airport rather than in the old town. It has 46 double rooms, 2 singles and 2 suites, an outdoor pool, a tennis court, a restaurant and a garden bar, and it runs a free transfer to and from the airport. It suits a short stay or an early flight out. For the old town and the harbour, drive or take the route 3 bus.

The Pousada de Juventude de Santa Maria, the island's youth hostel, is in an 18th-century house in the historic centre, a few steps from the port. It has shared and private rooms, shared bathrooms with showers, a locker in each room and a breakfast buffet included in the price, served in a dining room looking onto the pool. For a solo traveller, or anyone arriving by boat, it is the obvious bed.

Beyond these three, Vila do Porto has a spread of guesthouses and holiday flats registered as local accommodation. Much of the summer demand comes from Portugal itself: in June 2025, residents of Portugal accounted for 58.0% of the overnight stays in Santa Maria's hotels and local accommodation, according to the Azores statistics office (SREA). For July and August, book early.

Praia Formosa: the beach and the campsite

Praia Formosa, on the south coast in Almagreira parish, is the island's best-known sand beach and the site of the summer festival. The place to sleep at the beach is the Praia Formosa campsite, a couple of minutes' walk from the sand, with 6 bungalows for up to 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children, rental tents for 2 or 4 people, and pitches for your own tent on a first-come, first-served basis. Its booking pages, dated July 2025, priced a bungalow from 280 euros for two nights and a two-person rental tent from 23 euros a night. Time Out gave the 2025 season as 15 June to 30 September. Details and rules are in our guide to camping on Santa Maria.

In summer, TSM route 5 links Praia Formosa with Vila do Porto, the airport and Anjos every day from 1 July to 15 September, with three runs a day from the beach towards Anjos. Outside those dates there is no bus to the beach.

São Lourenço and Maia: quiet, and nothing else

The east coast villages are the prettiest corner of the island: the vineyard terraces of the Baía de São Lourenço, the sea pools and Maia under the lighthouse. The beds here are holiday homes.

The trade-off is plain. None of the five TSM routes stops in São Lourenço or Maia, the shops and restaurants are in Vila do Porto, and in winter the villages are very quiet. Stay here if you have a car, want a sea view and do not mind driving into town for dinner. Between November and March, ask whether the house has heating.

Santa Bárbara and Santo Espírito: rural houses inland

The greener north and east of the island, around Santa Bárbara and Santo Espírito, is the place for a rural house. One example is Casa do Norte, a converted house in Lugar do Norte, in Santa Bárbara parish. It is 3 km from the village centre, where there is a café and a grocery, 6 km from the Baía de São Lourenço and 13 km from Vila do Porto. It suits two people (it sleeps four), and the Azores government gave it the Miosótis award for environmental practice. Its last published price list, for 2022, ran from 65 euros a night in winter to 85 euros in summer, with a five-night minimum. Prices will have moved; ask.

Route 1, from Malbusca to Vila do Porto, passes through Santo Espírito and Santa Bárbara, but outside the school term it leaves Malbusca at 07:00 and 13:50 on weekdays and once on Saturdays, with nothing on Sundays. Treat a rural house as a car-only choice. For the village itself, see our walk around Santa Bárbara.

Maré de Agosto week

The Maré de Agosto festival fills the island once a year. In 2026 it ran from 19 to 22 August, with the first night at Macela and three nights on the stage at Praia Formosa. Guides to the island suggest booking a bed three to four months ahead for festival dates, and the campsite sits next to the stage. If you are not coming for the music, avoid the second half of August. If you are, book the flight and the bed before anything else. Our planning guide has more on the festival and the flights.

Which base for which trip

  • One or two nights, no car: Vila do Porto, near the old town or by the airport.
  • A beach week in July or August: Praia Formosa if you can get a bungalow, otherwise Vila do Porto with a hire car.
  • Walking the Grande Rota or the trails in the east: a rural house around Santa Bárbara or Santo Espírito, or a holiday home in São Lourenço.
  • Winter: Vila do Porto. The campsite is closed, and in town you have the shops, the restaurants that stay open and the pharmacy within walking distance. Our guide to Santa Maria in winter covers what else changes.

Quick answers

Can I stay on Santa Maria without a car? Yes, in Vila do Porto. Route 3 links the harbour, the town and the airport on weekdays, and taxis cover the rest. Anywhere else, plan on a hire car.

Can I sleep right at Praia Formosa? The bed on the beach is the campsite, with bungalows and rental tents in summer. The 2025 season ran from 15 June to 30 September.

How far ahead should I book? For July and August, as early as you can, and three to four months ahead for the Maré de Agosto week.

Is São Lourenço a good base? For a couple with a car who want quiet and a sea view, yes. No bus stops there, and the shops are in Vila do Porto, so you will drive in for most things.
