Santa Maria in winter: flights, weather and what stays open
Santa Maria from November to March: highs of 17 to 20 °C, December the wettest month, and sunset at about 17:29 on the shortest day. The 2026 summer boat was announced only until 1 October, so plan on flying and keep a spare day. The museum keeps winter hours and closes on Mondays, the Fontinhas forest park and the campsite close, and the buses stop on Sundays.
Santa Maria from November to March is mild and quiet. The practical side of a trip changes more than the temperature does. The summer boat from São Miguel stops, so you fly in and out. The beaches have no lifeguards, the forest park at Fontinhas is shut, the island buses don't run on Sundays, and in December the sun sets at about half past five. A winter visit works if you hire a car and leave a spare day before any long-haul flight.
What the weather is like
Santa Maria is the driest and sunniest of the Azores, but winter is still the rainy season. The 1991-2020 normals for the weather station at the airport give this picture:
- November: average high 20.1 °C, low 15.4 °C, about 94 mm of rain over 11 or 12 days
- December: 18.4 °C and 14.0 °C, about 155 mm over 15 or 16 days, the wettest month
- January: 17.5 °C and 13.3 °C, about 99 mm
- February: 17.3 °C and 12.7 °C, the coolest month
- March: 17.9 °C and 12.8 °C, about 93 mm
At sea level it is never cold. The lowest temperature on record at the airport is 0.9 °C, in February. What you notice in winter is the wind and how little sun there is. December averages about 107 hours of sunshine for the whole month, against about 263 in July, and its mean wind speed is about 23 km/h. Those figures come from the flat west of the island. The east, around Pico Alto (587 m), is wetter and often sits in cloud.
The days are short. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises over Vila do Porto at about 07:48 local time and sets at about 17:29, which gives you 9 hours 40 minutes of daylight. On 21 June you get almost 14 hours 45 minutes.
Getting there: plan on flying
There is no regular Atlânticoline ferry to Santa Maria. In 2026 the only sea link was the Isabel C, a small private ship that carried up to 16 passengers between Ponta Delgada and Vila do Porto from 2 July. The crossing took about 5 hours 20 minutes. The operator announced it until 1 October as a first phase and said it might extend the service by six months if demand justified it. By 7 October 2026 we had found no announcement of an extension. Check before you count on a boat, and plan on flying.
SATA Air Açores flies from Ponta Delgada in about 30 minutes, and Azores Airlines links the island with Lisbon. The airport's runway is 3,048 m long, but a long runway does not make flights immune to the weather. Across the whole SATA Air Açores network, 1,351 flights were cancelled between May 2025 and April 2026, and weather was the direct cause of 57 percent of them. Once knock-on cancellations are counted, the figure rises to 68 percent. There is no separate figure for Santa Maria.
In winter, leave at least one spare day between Santa Maria and a long-haul flight home. If a storm is forecast, don't rebook on your own: SATA's rules say that a voluntary change, when the flight has not been cancelled, gives you no right to assistance or compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004. That right applies only when the airline cancels. Our planning guide to Santa Maria covers the routes.
What stays open, and what does not
The island's indoor sights keep going through the winter, on shorter hours. What closes is mostly outdoors.
- The Museu de Santa Maria in Santo Espírito, with its collection of local pottery, keeps winter hours from 1 October to 31 March: Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, 09:30 to 17:00, closed on Mondays. Phone +351 296 884 844. More in our guide to Santo Espírito.
- The House of Fossils at the Dalberto Pombo interpretation centre on Rua Teófilo Braga in Vila do Porto is a good rainy-day stop, but it publishes no opening hours. Phone +351 296 206 798 first.
- The Fontinhas forest park on the slopes of Pico Alto, with its barbecues and play area, opens only from 1 June to 30 September.
- The Praia Formosa campsite is a summer operation. Time Out gave its season as 15 June to 30 September in 2025. In winter you sleep in Vila do Porto or in a rural house.
- The beaches are still there, but the 2026 lifeguard season ended on 13 September at Praia Formosa and Anjos and on 14 September at Maia and São Lourenço. See Santa Maria beaches.
- The Repsol station at Pedras de São Pedro, on the edge of Vila do Porto, opens every day from 08:00 to 22:00, weekends included.
Restaurants set their own days off, and nobody publishes a winter list. Phone ahead for Sunday and Monday meals, and ask where you are staying which kitchens are open that week. For the health centre, the pharmacies and cash, see our practical essentials for Santa Maria.
Getting around without the summer bus
The island bus network shrinks in winter. The TSM timetables show only weekday and Saturday departures, with no Sunday service on any route. Route 5, the one that links Praia Formosa, Vila do Porto, the airport and Anjos, runs only from 1 July to 15 September. No route reaches São Lourenço or Maia at any time of year. For a winter stay, book a hire car with the flight. Our guide to getting around Santa Maria lists the desks at the airport and the taxi number.
Walking and the sea in winter
Winter suits walking here, as long as you check the trails first. On 7 October 2026 the official alerts page listed two Santa Maria trails as temporarily closed: the Costa Sul (PR05SMA) and Santo Espírito to Maia (PR04SMA). The Pico Alto loop (PRC02SMA, 6.2 km) and the north-coast walk to Anjos (PR01SMA, 8.4 km) were not on the list. Look at trails.visitazores.com on the morning you walk, start the long routes early, and expect mud and cloud on the higher ground in the east. Our walking guide has the routes.
The sea cools slowly. It is about 21 °C in November and 19.5 °C in December, then 18.5 °C in January and 17.5 °C in February and March. With nobody on duty at the beaches, swim only on a calm day, never alone, and in a sheltered spot. A northerly swell can close the pool at Anjos.
Who should go in winter
Winter on Santa Maria suits walkers and anyone who wants a quiet island and has a car. It is the wrong season for a beach holiday, and a bad last stop before a long-haul flight. For warm water and long days, go from July to September. Our best time to visit Santa Maria has the month-by-month figures.
