How many days on Faial: what fits in one, two, three or four days

Two full days cover Faial's essentials: the Caldeira rim and Capelinhos in the west, then Horta and a whale-watching trip. Three adds a day on Pico by the 30-minute ferry; four gives time for the 19.3 km Dez Vulcões walk and a spare day for cloud. Day-by-day plans from Horta, the winter 2026/27 ferry times, and why the volcano centre closes on Sundays and Mondays from November.

Two full days cover the essentials of Faial: one for the Caldeira and the Capelinhos volcano in the west, one for Horta and a whale-watching trip. Three days lets you add a day on Pico, which is half an hour away by ferry. Four or more gives you time for the long walk from the crater to the sea and a spare day for the weather.

Faial is small. It covers 173 km² and is 21 km from end to end, and the airport is 9.5 km from the centre of Horta. You do not lose much time to driving, so the limit on a short stay is the cloud on the Caldeira and the opening days of the two visitor centres.

Opening hours, timetables and prices below were checked in October 2026. The parks service and the ferry company change them by season, so check before you go.

Three things that decide the order

The Caldeira needs a clear morning. The PRC04FAI trail round the crater rim is 6.8 km, circular and graded easy, about two and a half hours, between 840 and 1,040 metres. The trail register advises walking it only in good weather and visibility, and the descent back to the viewpoint is steep and uneven. The rim is often in cloud while Horta is in sun. Look at it from town in the morning and go up when you can see the top. The crater itself is about 2 km across and 400 metres deep. You can only go down inside with a Faial Nature Park guide, no more than 40 visitors a day.

From 1 November the volcano centre closes on Sundays and Mondays. The Capelinhos interpretation centre opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from April to October. From 1 November to 31 March it opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry an hour before closing. The adult ticket was EUR 10 in 2026. The Faial Botanic Garden in Flamengos keeps the same days and hours. On a winter trip, put the west of the island on a weekday.

The ferry sets the Pico day. The winter 2026/27 timetable has boats from Horta to Madalena at 07:30, 10:45, 14:15 and 17:15 every day, and back from Madalena at 08:15, 11:30, 15:00 and 18:00. The crossing takes 30 minutes. Wednesday and Thursday have extra sailings. The seasonal lines to the other islands stopped running in October.

Where to base yourself

Stay in Horta for a short trip. The ferry terminal, the restaurants, the marina and Porto Pim beach are all within walking distance of each other. If you are on Faial mainly to walk, a room in the west near Capelo puts you closer to the trails, but every evening in town becomes a drive. Our guide to Horta compares the areas.

Hire a car for at least the day in the west. Buses run from Horta to the parishes, but not on a timetable that suits a day at the Caldeira and Capelinhos. See getting around Faial.

One day

With one day, perhaps on a day trip from Pico, drive up to the Caldeira viewpoint first thing. If it is clear, walk the rim, or part of it. Then drive west to Capelinhos for the visitor centre, the lighthouse and the ash slopes of the 1957-58 eruption, which added 2.4 km² to the island. Back in Horta, end the day at the marina and Peter Café Sport. This misses the whales. The Capelinhos and Caldeira guide has the details.

Two days

Day 1: the Caldeira and the west. The one-day plan at a slower pace. After Capelinhos, follow the west coast south to the natural pools at Varadouro for a swim in summer, or stop at the Morro de Castelo Branco on the way back. The round-island drive lists the viewpoints.

Day 2: Horta and the whales. Book a morning boat trip from Horta. Naturalist, one of the town's operators, says its trips last three to four hours. Lookouts on the cliffs search the sea before the boats leave and guide them by radio. In the afternoon, walk to Porto Pim and up Monte da Guia, then visit the botanic garden or the scrimshaw museum. The whale-watching guide covers the season and the operators.

If the Caldeira is in cloud on day 1, swap the two days. The boats go out in sun or cloud, as long as the sea is calm enough.

Three days

Add a day on Pico. Take an early ferry to Madalena and hire a car there. That is enough time for the UNESCO vineyards at Criação Velha, the lava arches at Cachorro and a tour of the Gruta das Torres lava tube, and you can still catch the 18:00 boat back. Climbing Mount Pico from Faial makes a very long day: the climb alone takes six to eight hours, before you add the ferry. The day-trip guide has the timings.

Four days or more

A long walk. The PR06FAI Dez Vulcões trail starts at the Caldeira viewpoint and ends at the Capelinhos centre car park. It is 19.3 km and graded hard, about five hours. It goes round part of the rim and down the line of cones on the Capelo peninsula to the 1957 ash. You need a taxi or a second car at one end. For something gentler, the PR03FAI Levada trail is 7.6 km and easy, about two and a half hours. The walking guide compares the trails.

Beaches and the east. Spend a day at Praia do Almoxarife and Porto Pim, or drive the north coast through Cedros to the Ribeirinha lighthouse ruin. See beaches on Faial.

A spare day. Keep one day free for the Caldeira or for a boat trip the sea cancelled.

What changes the plan

  • Cloud on the Caldeira: go up when you can see the rim from Horta, and keep a second day for it.
  • November to March: the Capelinhos centre and the botanic garden close on Sundays and Mondays, and both can close in bad weather.
  • Rough sea: whale trips and ferries can be cancelled. Book the boat early in your stay.
  • Rain: rainy-day Faial lists what is under a roof, and what a Faial trip costs has the 2026 prices.
