Beaches on Faial: Porto Pim, Almoxarife, Varadouro and the natural pools

Faial has six official bathing waters, and in 2026 only four of them had lifeguards: Porto Pim, Almoxarife, Varadouro and Castelo Branco, from 1 June (Porto Pim from 15 June) to 30 September. The calm town beach, the big black-sand beach facing Pico and the bus that gets you there, the lava pools in the west and south, and the unguarded spots for a calm day.

Faial has two proper sand beaches, a handful of sea pools cut into the lava and a few old harbours where people swim off the rocks. Picking one is mostly a practical question: is there a lifeguard, can you get there without a car, and what is the sea doing today.

Where the lifeguards are

Portugal publishes its list of official bathing waters every spring. The 2026 list names six on Faial, all in the municipality of Horta: Almoxarife, Porto Pim, Varadouro, Castelo Branco, Conceição and Fajã. Only the first four were listed with lifeguards. In 2026 the season ran from 1 June to 30 September at all of them, except Porto Pim, where it started on 15 June.

The same four flew the Blue Flag in 2026. Outside those dates, and anywhere else on the island at any time, you swim without a lifeguard. The dates change slightly from year to year, so check the new list before an early June or late September trip.

Porto Pim, the town beach

Porto Pim is the bay on the far side of Horta, sheltered by the neck of land that runs out to Monte da Guia. The sand is fine and dark, and the water is about as calm as the Azores gets, because the bay faces away from the prevailing swell. It has toilets, showers, step-free access, a bar and a restaurant.

It is a ten-minute walk from the marina, so it is the obvious swim if you are staying in town without a car. The Entre Montes trail (PRC08FAI), a 3.4 kilometre circuit over the hills above the bay, starts from the beach car park, and you can finish the walk in the water. Our guide to Horta covers the old whaling factory at the back of the bay and the rest of the town.

Praia do Almoxarife, the big one

Almoxarife is the island's largest stretch of sand, on the east coast north of Horta, with Pico across the channel. It has toilets, showers, step-free access, a bar and a restaurant, and a campsite next to it. Because it looks straight at the channel, it can be choppy when the wind blows from the east, and it is at its best in the late afternoon, when the light is behind you and the mountain opposite is often clear.

You can get there by bus. Route 4 runs a loop from Horta over the hill through Pedro Miguel and back. On the weekday timetable we checked in October 2026, the bus leaves Horta at 07:10, 12:40, 16:40 and 18:10 and reaches the beach 25 minutes later. That makes an afternoon easy: take the 12:40, which arrives at 13:05, and ride back on the 17:05 or the 18:35. On Saturday the loop runs only twice, leaving Horta at 07:10 and 13:15. The 13:15 passes the beach at 13:40 on its way back to town and nothing comes later, so a Saturday afternoon on the sand means a taxi home. There is no bus on Sunday. Our guide to getting around Faial has the other routes.

Varadouro and Castelo Branco, the sea pools

On the south and west coasts most of the swimming is in the lava rather than on sand.

  • Varadouro, in the parish of Capelo, is the furthest from Horta. Its pools are natural rock basins, with toilets, showers and a bar above them, and a lifeguard in season. The village sits on the same coast as Capelinhos, so the two make a natural day together. See our guide to Capelinhos and the Caldeira.
  • Castelo Branco, on the south coast in the same parish as the airport, has pools formed by cuts in the rock, with changing rooms, a picnic area and a playground. It is also lifeguarded in season, and it held the Blue Flag in 2026.

Both are a drive from Horta. The south-coast bus does stop in Castelo Branco and Capelo, but it runs only a few times a day, so read the timetable before you rely on it.

Unguarded spots

None of these has a lifeguard. Swim here on a calm day, with someone else around, and watch the sea for a few minutes before you get in.

  • Conceição, the small beach just north of the Horta ferry terminal. It is on the official list of bathing waters but had no lifeguard assured in 2026.
  • Poça da Rainha, in Feteira, west of Horta. A rock pool surrounded by basalt, recently given a sunbathing area and easier steps into the sea, with toilets and showers. It is good for snorkelling.
  • Porto do Comprido, near the Capelinhos volcano. A bathing spot in the basalt at the old harbour the whaling boats used to launch from. There are no facilities.
  • Praia da Fajã, at Praia do Norte on the north coast. Black sand under a green cliff, but the sea here is rough enough for surfing. It is on the official list, without a lifeguard.

Which one to pick

  • No car, staying in Horta: Porto Pim, and Almoxarife by bus on a weekday.
  • With children: Porto Pim for the calm water, or the pools at Varadouro or Castelo Branco.
  • A day out west: Capelinhos in the morning, Varadouro in the afternoon.
  • Snorkelling: Poça da Rainha, on a calm day.
