Terceira with kids: beaches, caves, parks and easy days out
Planning Terceira with children: why Praia Grande in Praia da Vitória is the beach for toddlers, which of the two show caves suits which age (338 steps at Algar do Carvão; under-12s free, adults €10 and €9 in 2026), the animal pens and picnic area on Monte Brasil, Angra's garden playground and the museum that was free for under-14s, the child-seat rule for hire cars, and what to do when it rains.
Terceira is an easy island for a family. Distances are short, Angra do Heroísmo has a garden with a playground and a museum that children enter free, and Praia da Vitória has a sand beach behind breakwaters, which is rare in the Azores. The planning questions are practical: which cave suits a small child, where to swim when the sea is up, and what to do on a grey afternoon. This guide answers them, with prices and hours as we found them in 2026.
Where to base yourselves
With small children, stay in Praia da Vitória or Angra. Praia da Vitória is the beach town. Its main beach, Praia Grande, is a long strand of pale sand inside a bay closed by two breakwaters, and the promenade behind it is flat enough for a pushchair. Angra is the bigger town, with more restaurants, and the garden, the museum and Monte Brasil are all within walking distance. The island is small, so you can stay in one town and spend days in the other.
You will want a hire car. Portuguese law (article 55 of the Highway Code) says children under 12 who are shorter than 135 cm must travel in an approved child seat, and in the back unless one of the narrow exceptions applies. Book seats with the car, and check they arrive in the right size.
Beaches and sea pools
For toddlers, go to Praia Grande in Praia da Vitória. The breakwaters keep the water flat on most days, and in the bathing season there are lifeguards, showers, toilets and cafés. Prainha, the small beach at the north end of the same bay, is five minutes on foot from the town centre and usually quieter.
Angra has no sand. Its bathing place, Silveira, is a set of concrete decks and ladders on the rock just west of the city, which suits children who already swim. On the north coast, the lava pools at Biscoitos have shallow corners in summer, but a northerly swell closes them and the rock is sharp, so bring water shoes.
On the platforms and pools, a lifeguard is there only in the bathing season. Outside it, keep children well back from the outer edge, where waves can come over the rock on a day that looks calm.
The caves, and which one suits your children
Terceira's two show caves are run by the caving association Os Montanheiros, and both are in the middle of the island.
Algar do Carvão is a volcanic chimney you walk down into. It is spectacular and hard work: 338 steps down damp stone to about 90 metres below the rim, and the same steps back up. The operator says it is not recommended for babies or toddlers, and you cannot take a pushchair. It suits children who are steady on stairs and happy to climb.
Gruta do Natal is a lava tube 697 metres long. It is flatter, but the floor is uneven and wet and there are two short staircases. The operator advises trainers or walking boots and does not recommend it for babies or children who need carrying.
Prices on the operator's pages in 2026: Algar do Carvão €10 and Gruta do Natal €9 per adult. Children under 12 go in free with a paying adult. Both caves open only in the afternoon, and the drive up from Angra takes 20 to 25 minutes. In the published calendar they open daily from April to September (14:00 to 18:00 in June to September, 14:30 to 17:00 in April and May), and from October to March only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 14:30 to 17:00. The calendar is labelled 2023, and works at the Algar visitor centre changed its days in 2026, so check montanheiros.com before you drive up. Inside it is about 12 to 13 °C and it drips, so bring a jacket even in August.
A morning that works before the caves: the boardwalk at Furnas do Enxofre, a steaming fumarole field near Algar do Carvão, is about 1 km and free. Hold hands there, because the ground beside the boardwalk is hot. Then eat a picnic at Lagoa das Patas, a forest recreation area round a small lake on the road to Doze Ribeiras, with picnic tables and paths under Japanese cedars, and be at the cave when it opens.
Monte Brasil
The extinct volcano at the west end of Angra's bay is a recreational forest reserve, and the best half day in town for children. Start at the Relvão park at its foot, a short walk from the centre, and walk or drive up the paved road to Pico das Cruzinhas. Up there you get the whole city below you, the monument to 500 years of settlement (1432 to 1932), anti-aircraft guns from the Second World War, and aviaries and animal pens. There is a picnic area too.
The full official trail, PRC04TER, is a 7.5 km circular walk of about 2 hours 30 minutes, graded medium. That is a lot for small legs, and the paths along the crater rim drop away sharply in places. With young children, walk the road up to Pico das Cruzinhas and come back the same way.
A morning in Angra
The Jardim Duque da Terceira, the town garden in the old centre, has a playground. It is free and listed as open daily from 8:00 to 18:00. Paths climb through the garden to the Alto da Memória obelisk, but that part is steps and steep ramps, so one adult with a pushchair may want to wait below.
Below the garden, the Museu de Angra do Heroísmo in the old São Francisco convent has carriages, cannons and ship models that keep school-age children busy for about half an hour. In the museum's July 2023 programme, entry was free for children up to 14 and for everyone on Sundays, adults paid €2, and the museum was closed on Mondays. We could not find 2026 prices, so treat those as a guide.
Rainy days
On a wet day, the caves and the museum are the obvious plan, because neither depends on the weather. Remember the cave hours, though: from October to March the caves open only four afternoons a week, and the museum is closed on Mondays. On a Monday in winter, neither is open.
Quick answers
Can a toddler go into Algar do Carvão? The operator does not recommend it for babies or toddlers. There are 338 damp steps each way and no pushchairs. Gruta do Natal is flatter but is also not recommended for children who need carrying.
Which beach is best for small children? Praia Grande in Praia da Vitória. It is sand, sheltered by breakwaters and has lifeguards in season.
Do children pay at the caves? Children under 12 go in free with a paying adult, according to the operator's 2026 pages. Adults paid €10 at Algar do Carvão and €9 at Gruta do Natal.
Do I need a child seat in a hire car? Yes. Under Portuguese law, children under 12 and under 135 cm must use an approved child seat. Order it with the car.
