Terceira hospital performs its first cardiac catheterisations
Heart patients on Terceira can now have a catheterisation on the island, after the hospital's new haemodynamics unit treated its first patients.
The Hospital de Santo Espírito da Ilha Terceira in Angra do Heroísmo carried out its first three cardiac catheterisations on Monday, 26 October, in its new haemodynamics unit.
The unit was inaugurated in August. It diagnoses and treats cardiovascular disease with minimally invasive procedures. According to the Regional Government, the aim is to reduce how often patients have to travel to other hospitals.
In January the hospital reopened its intermediate cardiac care unit, known as the coronary unit, which had been closed since 2012. A training post for a cardiology specialist is now open at the hospital under the medical residency programme.
