IL/Açores will hold internal elections on 17 October, with regional parliament deputy Nuno Barata standing for the leadership.

The 17 October 2026 election will close the mandate of IL/Açores' current local coordination group, led by Hugo Almeida. Almeida was elected in November 2024 on Terceira island.

Nuno Barata will stand again for the IL/Açores leadership. IL/Açores said he will be the only candidate. Barata is the party's deputy in the Azores regional parliament and was IL's first regional coordinator in the Azores.

Almeida is not seeking re-election for personal and professional reasons. He said he will remain involved in the liberal project in the Azores. During his term, IL/Açores prepared the 2025 local election process and said it strengthened its presence in several municipal bodies, including municipal and parish assemblies.

The plenary of the IL Azores territorial nucleus will take place in person and remotely. The in-person meeting will be held at Hotel Ponta Delgada on São Miguel. The meeting will have a reports and accounts section and an electoral section. The first part will be closed to the media, while the electoral section and closing session will be open. The closing session will include a speech by the newly elected regional coordinator.

Update — 2026-10-18

Nuno Barata was elected regional leader of IL/Açores on 17 October with 74% of the vote, receiving 17 votes from 23 registered members, for the 2026-2028 term.

At the same meeting, Pedro Ferreira was elected vice-coordinator, Alexandra Cunha secretary-general of IL/Açores, and Luís Miguel Quental became president of the Regional Plenary Board.
