Occupational scholarship workers supporting inclusive education in Azorean schools are seeking talks with parliamentary parties on pay, social protection and professional recognition.

A group of occupational scholarship workers has requested meetings with political parties represented in parliament to present its working reality in Azorean schools and proposals to address precarious conditions.

The extraordinary support assistants are part of a government programme that supports daily inclusive education for students with specific educational needs. Their representatives said the need for this support is permanent and predictable, and called for stable solutions with fair and dignified working conditions.

They said inequalities and shortcomings remain and require a political and legislative response. Their demands include pay equivalent to 14 months a year, Social Security registration and contributions for the full period needed to ensure effective social protection, and professional recognition and valorisation of education assistants in the regional education system.

The initiative's signatories said inclusive schools depend both on support for students and on valuing the professionals who provide that support each day. The representatives said they are available to meet the parties in the coming days to seek changes that provide greater labour justice and social protection.
