Luís Garcia highlights Azorean diaspora after Santa Catarina visit
Luís Garcia said the 50th anniversary of autonomy also recognises the Azorean community beyond the region, including in Brazil.
Luís Garcia, president of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores, made the remarks after visiting Santa Catarina, Brazil, where he held institutional contacts.
He said marking 50 years of autonomy also means recognising the Azorean community beyond the nine islands. Garcia said autonomy gave the Azores political and institutional dimension, but Azorean identity had long asserted itself beyond the Atlantic.
The visit included the Núcleo de Estudos Açoreanos of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, the Historical and Geographical Institute of Santa Catarina, and the Academy of Letters of Santa Catarina. The three institutions have contributed in different fields to preserving, studying and valuing the Azorean presence in the state.
