Bolieiro calls Azores a bridge between Portugal and North America
José Manuel Bolieiro called the Azores a living bridge between Portugal and North America at PALCUS's 35th-anniversary gala.
José Manuel Bolieiro presided on Saturday over PALCUS's 35th-anniversary gala at the Coliseu Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, according to an Azorean government press release. At the gala, he said the Portuguese diaspora strengthens relations between Portugal and the United States.
Bolieiro said the Azores occupy a central position in transatlantic relations and are a living bridge between Portugal and North America. He said PALCUS is important in valuing the Luso-American community, preserving Portuguese cultural identity and deepening institutional, political and economic relations between Portugal and the United States.
He said PALCUS helps give voice to the Luso-American community and acknowledged its work bringing communities closer and passing Portuguese values and traditions to new generations. Bolieiro thanked PALCUS president Katherine Soares and her team for promoting the Luso-American community and reinforcing cooperation between the two sides of the Atlantic.
Bolieiro said 2026 is symbolic because it marks 250 years of US independence and 50 years of the political autonomy of the Azores. He said the anniversaries are an opportunity to deepen lasting ties between residents in the Azores and the diaspora.
PALCUS is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organisation founded in 1991 by a group of Luso-Americans, according to information on its official website.
