Azores suicide prevention line logs 191 mental-health-related calls
The Regional Suicide Prevention Line has handled about 600 calls since it began operating, with officials preparing a technical change intended to reduce improper calls.
The Azores Regional Suicide Prevention Line recorded 191 calls associated with mental illness during its last five months of operation. Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security Mónica Seidi highlighted the figures at the opening of the 1st Psychology Days of the São Miguel Island Health Unit.
Since starting operations, the line has handled about 600 calls through 800 25 25 25. The contacts included five related to self-harm situations and 24 involving people with a significant psychiatric history.
Analysis identified improper calls. A technical adjustment to the number is being prepared to reduce them and direct the service more closely to people who need support.
Suicide prevention is being coordinated with Community Mental Health Teams to strengthen follow-up after an initial referral. By 30 September 2026, all nine Azores islands had established teams, involving about 50 doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers.
Compiled activity data for teams on São Miguel, Corvo, Faial and Pico recorded 1,176 in-person appointments, 93 home appointments and 263 non-face-to-face appointments. Their work also includes community and health-literacy actions in school health, occupational health, bereavement support, professional training and mental-health promotion.
