Regional deputy Nuno Barata is standing for the Azores Liberal Initiative leadership as Hugo Almeida ends his term without seeking re-election.

The Azores branch of the Liberal Initiative will hold its elective plenary and internal elections on 17 October at Hotel Ponta Delgada in São Miguel, with in-person and remote participation. Regional deputy Nuno Barata, the structure's first regional coordinator, is a candidate for regional coordinator.

The vote ends the term of the current local coordination group, led by Hugo Almeida. Almeida, who was elected in November 2024 on Terceira, will not seek re-election for personal and professional reasons, but said he will remain involved in and contribute to the liberal project in the Azores.

During his term, Almeida prepared the 2025 local-election process. According to the sources, the party increased its representation or weight in municipal and parish assemblies.

The meeting marks six years of Liberal Initiative activity in the Azores. Its first part will be internal and closed to the media; the second will be open to the media and include the election process, the results announcement and the closing session.

Journalists will be able to follow the results announcement from 11:30. The inauguration of the elected bodies is scheduled for 11:45, followed by the new regional coordinator's speech at 11:50.
