Azores launches tender for new Ribeira Grande Health Centre

The Azores government launched yesterday the public tender for the design-build contract for a new Ribeira Grande Health Centre, with a base price of €26 million. The Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure is promoting the procedure in coordination with the Regional Secretariat for Health and Social Security. The procedure is published in the Official Journal of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
The Açores 2030 programme will co-finance the project. The new health centre will be built on Rua dos Bombeiros Voluntários, in the parish of Conceição, on a site of about 35,000 square metres. It will fully replace the current Ribeira Grande Health Centre and move all care activity to the new facilities.
The health centre has a planned gross reference area of more than 10,000 square metres. It is designed to bring together primary healthcare, medical and nursing consultations, dental medicine, a 24-hour basic emergency unit, minor surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, imaging, diagnostic exams, laboratory services, integrated home support and continuing-care inpatient services.
The facility will have 63 inpatient places across three wards, continuous laboratory services and imaging facilities prepared for future CT equipment. The complex will also have parking for at least 360 vehicles, a reserve area for expansion, and administrative, technical, logistics and professional training areas.
According to a government statement, the tender is a decisive step towards infrastructure long awaited by Ribeira Grande residents. The building will follow environmental sustainability, energy-efficiency and seismic-resilience criteria, with renewable energy systems and mechanisms intended to maintain care during emergencies.

The Azores government said the new Ribeira Grande Health Centre is part of its strategy to modernise and upgrade Regional Health Service infrastructure and strengthen healthcare capacity across Ribeira Grande and São Miguel's entire north coast.
