A rainy day on São Jorge: museums, cheese visits and what opens when

What to do on São Jorge when it rains: the Francisco de Lacerda Museum in Calheta, the Cunha da Silveira house museum in Velas, the Nature Park's Casa do Parque and the cheese museum in Norte Grande, cheese visits by appointment, and coffee and quilts at Fajã dos Vimes. With the published hours, the 2026 tour prices, and why Sunday and Monday need planning.

When cloud sits on São Jorge's ridge and the fajã paths turn to mud, the island still has a day's worth of things to do under a roof. They are small places, though, spread from Velas in the west to Topo in the east, and most of them keep weekday hours or need a phone call first. Plan the day around the calendar more than the weather: a wet Tuesday is easy, a wet Sunday is hard, and on a Monday the main museum is shut.

None of the places below publish a ticket price that we could find, so take some cash. The hours are the ones published when we checked in October 2026. Small island venues change them without notice, so ring ahead.

The Francisco de Lacerda Museum in Calheta

This is the island's main museum, in the former tuna cannery beside Calheta harbour. It has three subjects: the island, its music, and the tuna canning that once ran on the site. The music rooms are about the conductor and composer Francisco de Lacerda, born in Ribeira Seca a few kilometres away, and the island's philharmonic bands.

Published hours:

  • 1 April to 30 September: Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:30, weekends and holidays 12:00 to 17:30.
  • 1 October to 31 March: Tuesday to Friday 09:30 to 17:00, weekends and holidays 12:00 to 17:00.
  • No Monday opening is listed.

The phone number is +351 295 416 323. The museum and its branch, the Santa Bárbara church in Manadas, give daily guided tours, and groups of ten or more should book. Our Calheta guide covers the rest of the town.

The Santa Bárbara church in Manadas

Between Velas and Calheta, on the lower road through Manadas, the Santa Bárbara church is run as part of the same museum. It is a single building, so it suits a short stop on the drive between the two towns rather than a morning. Ask the Calheta museum about tour times on the number above.

Casa-Museu Cunha da Silveira in Velas

In the centre of Velas, this manor, probably built in the 18th century, belonged to the Cunha da Silveira family, who ran much of the island's political life for generations. Pedro, the former emperor of Brazil, rested there on 11 April 1832, during a visit to Velas. The town council now owns it, and its rooms are given over to farming, the sea, carpentry, weaving, and weights and measures, with one room on the family.

We found no official opening hours or phone number for it in 2026. Ask at the town hall in Velas before you plan around it.

The Casa do Parque and the cheese museum in Norte Grande

On the north coast, about 15 km from Velas by the road to the Nortes, two old primary schools have been turned into small exhibitions within a few minutes of each other.

The Casa do Parque is the visitor centre of the island's Nature Park. It has a map of the protected areas, a children's corner, sounds and information on the Ramsar wetlands, and an auditorium that shows documentaries on the fajãs. That last part is useful on a day when you cannot walk down to them. It is on the left about 100 metres after the turn for Fajã do Ouvidor.

The park publishes these terms for it:

  • Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, all year.
  • Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Free entry. Children under 12 come with an adult.
  • Guided visits of 45 to 60 minutes if you book at least 48 hours ahead.

Nearby, in Ribeira da Areia, the Núcleo Museológico "A Queijaria" shows how cheese and butter making changed from the late 19th century into the 20th. It is managed by the Cunha da Silveira museum in Velas, and it lists no hours of its own, so ask there.

Cheese visits by appointment

The São Jorge Cheese Route groups the island's dairies into guided itineraries. None of them works as a drop-in visit, so this is something to book on the first sign of a bad forecast, not on the morning itself.

  • The Velas itinerary runs Tuesday to Friday by appointment and takes in the Uniqueijo plant at Beira, where the island's cooperatives cure and pack their cheese, and the Cunha da Silveira museum. In 2026 the certified agent charges 30 euros for the half day, and the route asks you to book up to a week ahead.
  • The northern itinerary runs Monday to Friday by appointment. Its Lourais factory visit is currently unavailable, so it uses Uniqueijo instead, and it adds the cheese museum and the Casa do Parque.
  • The Topo itinerary runs Monday to Saturday by appointment and ends with a tasting at the Finisterra cooperative. A morning at the Quinta Feliz farm can be added, at 25 euros per person in 2026, for two to eight people, booked at least three days ahead.

Our cheese guide explains the ages and the stamps before you go.

Coffee and quilts at Fajã dos Vimes

Fajã dos Vimes, on the south coast east of Calheta, has its own road, so you can drive down in the rain. Café Nunes has been there since 1997, with more than 500 coffee plants behind the house; the harvest runs from May to September. Upstairs, the family's craft shop sells ponto alto quilts and rugs woven on a wooden loom. No hours are published; the number is +351 295 416 717. Our shopping guide has more on the quilts.

Tuna from the Calheta cannery

The Santa Catarina cannery at Fajã Grande, just outside Calheta, is still working. A 2017 Time Out listing gave its kiosk at the entrance as open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30, with guided factory visits by appointment in the mornings only. We could not confirm those hours for 2026, so treat it as a weekday stop and check on the spot.

The sacred art museum in Velas

Next to the main church in Velas there is a small sacred art museum. An older listing gives visits by appointment only, on +351 295 412 214. Phone before you count on it.

How to plan the day

  • Tuesday to Friday: the easiest days. Book a cheese visit, then add the Calheta museum, or the Casa do Parque if you are staying in Velas.
  • Saturday: the Calheta museum opens at noon, and the Topo cheese itinerary still runs if you booked. The Casa do Parque is closed.
  • Sunday: only the Calheta museum lists hours, from noon. Drive down to Fajã dos Vimes and phone the café first.
  • Monday: no museum lists hours. Book a northern or Topo cheese visit, and see the Casa do Parque if it is not a holiday.

You will need a car or a taxi; the buses are too sparse to link these places in a day. Our getting-around guide covers both, and the winter guide covers what else changes from November.
