Planning São Jorge: ferry or flight, Velas or Calheta, and how many days

São Jorge is the long, thin island in the middle of the central group, 53 kilometres from end to end and never more than 8 across. Planning it comes down to four decisions: how you get there, which town you sleep in, whether you need a car, and how many nights to give it. The answers depend mostly on the season and on whether you want to walk down to the fajãs.

If São Jorge is part of a trip that also takes in Pico and Faial, the ferry is the natural way in. The operator is Atlânticoline, and in summer four of its lines call at the island.

• The Linha Verde (Green Line) is the year-round link. It connects Horta on Faial, Madalena and São Roque on Pico, and Velas on São Jorge. In summer 2026 it ran at least two connections a day, morning and afternoon.
• The Linha Laranja (Orange Line) is a summer shuttle between Velas and São Roque do Pico. In 2026 it ran from 15 June to 15 September, at least twice a day, every day except Wednesday and Thursday.
• The Linha Branca (White Line) links all five islands of the central group, including Graciosa and Terceira, calling at Velas. In summer 2026 it sailed on Mondays and Fridays.
• The Linha Lilás (Purple Line) connects Horta and Madalena with Calheta on São Jorge and Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira, on Tuesdays and Saturdays from June to September.

Outside the summer only the Green Line runs, with fewer sailings. Timetables change every season, so check the current one on atlanticoline.pt before you fix any dates.

The ferries carry cars. If you bring one across, it has to be at the port at least 30 minutes before departure, and you will need the vehicle's registration details when you book. Check your rental contract before you plan on it.

São Jorge airport (SJZ) is in the parish of Santo Amaro, about 6 kilometres from Velas and 28 kilometres from Calheta. SATA Air Açores flies there from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel and from Lajes on Terceira, and those are the only routes. There are no direct flights from mainland Portugal or from abroad, so arriving from Lisbon means a change at Ponta Delgada or Terceira.

Flying makes sense if you are coming from São Miguel or Terceira and do not plan to visit Pico or Faial. If you are touring the triangle, the ferry is simpler.

The island has two municipalities, each named after its main town.

Velas is the bigger of the two, with about 5,400 people in the municipality at the 2011 census, and it is where the Green Line ferry and the airport are. It has a sea pool, the Poça dos Frades, below the town wall, and it is the best base if you are relying on buses or taxis. It is also the closer of the two to Fajã do Ouvidor and the north coast.

Calheta is smaller, with about 3,800 people in its municipality in 2011, and quieter. It is on the south coast in the eastern half, which puts it closer to the east of the island: Fajã dos Vimes, Fajã de São João, Topo and the start of the walk to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo at Serra do Topo. The Lilás ferry line calls here in summer.

• Choose Velas if you arrive on the Green Line or by air, stay only two nights, or will not have a car.
• Choose Calheta if you have a car and your main plan is the eastern fajãs and the Santo Cristo walk.
• For four nights or more, split the stay: two in each.

Yes, for almost any plan beyond Velas itself. The bus network is thin. Often there is only one practical connection a day between the main villages, buses do not generally run on Sundays, and the mountain and fajã roads have no service at all. Taxis exist and can be booked for a single trip, for example to drop you at the top of a trail, but they get expensive over a whole day.

Book the car before you arrive. The roads down to the fajãs are narrow and steep, with hairpins where two cars cannot pass, so a small car is easier than a large one.

• One day, as a day trip from Pico: the morning and afternoon sailings in summer make it possible, but you will see Velas, a viewpoint or two and Fajã do Ouvidor, and not much more.
• Two nights: one day for the Santo Cristo walk, one for driving the north and south coasts. This is the minimum we would suggest.
• Three or four nights: time for the walk, the drivable fajãs, a cheese dairy visit at Beira or Topo, and a spare day for the weather. Heavy rain closed the road to Fajã dos Cubres three times between October 2025 and September 2026.

The Grande Rota, the long-distance trail along the whole island, is about 92 kilometres in two sections and a trip of its own.

How do I get from Pico to São Jorge? By ferry. The year-round Green Line sails from Madalena and São Roque to Velas, and in summer the Orange Line adds extra crossings between São Roque and Velas. Check the Atlânticoline timetable for the current season.

Is there a direct flight to São Jorge from Lisbon? No. SATA Air Açores flies to São Jorge only from Ponta Delgada and Terceira, so you change planes on one of those islands.

Should I stay in Velas or Calheta? Velas if you arrive on the Green Line or by air, or have no car. Calheta if you have a car and want to be close to the eastern fajãs and the Serra do Topo trailhead.

How many days do you need on São Jorge? Two nights at minimum, one for the walk to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and one for driving the coasts. Three or four nights give you a buffer for weather, which matters on this island.
