Azores tenders for 400 GPS devices for Pico Mountain
The Azores government has opened a €152,000 tender for 400 GPS tracking devices intended to strengthen safety and emergency support for visitors climbing Pico Mountain.
The Government of the Azores has launched a public tender for 400 GPS terminals to monitor and track visitors on Pico Mountain. The tender aims to strengthen safety, emergency-response capacity and sustainable management of the mountain.
According to a government statement, the tender has a base value of €152,000. The devices will be configured to integrate with the CICLOPE system used to monitor and track visitors on Pico Mountain.
The equipment will provide real-time user location tracking, emergency alerts and stronger support and surveillance mechanisms linked to climbing the mountain. It must include mobile communications, GPS/GNSS location, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth positioning, two-way voice communication, a dedicated emergency button and safety-event detection and communication functions.
The terminals must have at least 24 hours of battery life, protection suitable for outdoor use, CE marking and interoperability with the existing visitor-monitoring infrastructure. Delivery will take place in two phases: 30 devices first, followed by the remaining 370.
Regional Secretary for Environment and Climate Action Alonso Miguel said the government is continuing to invest in measures that strengthen visitor safety while improving management of the protected natural area. The government said the investment forms part of its strategy to combine technology, safety and nature conservation in protected areas.
