A day trip to Santa Maria from São Miguel: flight times, car hire and a route that fits

SATA Air Açores flies from Ponta Delgada to Santa Maria at 06:30 and back in the evening, which gives you about twelve hours on the island. The October 2026 flight times, fares, car hire and buses, a one-day driving route from Barreiro da Faneca to Praia Formosa, and what happens if the evening flight is cancelled.

Santa Maria is half an hour by plane from Ponta Delgada, and the timetable makes a day trip possible: a flight out at dawn and one back in the evening. You get about twelve hours on the ground. With a hire car that covers the island's best-known sights, but it leaves little time for walking.

This guide covers the flights as they stood in October 2026, what the day costs, how to get around on arrival, and a driving route that leaves room for a delay.

The flights that make it work

SATA Air Açores flies the route with Dash 8-400 turboprops, and the official flight-status board on azoresairlines.pt showed this pattern on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 October 2026:

  • Out: SP 101 leaves Ponta Delgada at 06:30 and lands on Santa Maria at 07:00, on both days.
  • Back on Sunday: SP 106 leaves Santa Maria at 19:55 and lands in Ponta Delgada at 20:25.
  • Back on Monday: SP 106 leaves at 21:05 and lands at 21:35.

On the Sunday there was also a midday pair (14:10 out, 15:05 back) on a smaller Dash 200, and the board showed both running late that afternoon. It was not there on the Monday. The return time moves from day to day, so look up the exact date you want before you book.

The early start is the price. A 06:30 departure means leaving a Ponta Delgada hotel well before six, and in October you land in the dark: sunrise on Santa Maria on 11 October 2026 was at 07:43 and sunset at 19:11. In early July the sun rises around 06:25 and sets after 21:00, which makes a summer day trip easier.

What it costs

On 11 October 2026 the Azores Airlines fares page listed a Ponta Delgada to Santa Maria return at €113 for travel from 15 to 18 October, and from €61 for a return at the end of January 2027. Those prices were collected in the previous 48 hours and change quickly. Add a day's car hire and fuel. The Repsol station at Pedras de São Pedro, near Vila do Porto, opens every day from 07:00 to 23:00, so you can fill up before the evening flight.

The boat is no option for a day trip. In summer 2026 a small cargo ship, the Isabel C, carried up to 16 passengers between the two islands, but the crossing took about 5 hours 20 minutes, and it left Ponta Delgada on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 17:00 and Vila do Porto on other days.

Getting around once you land

Hire a car and collect it at the airport. Rent-a-Car Mariense and Sol Brava both deliver there, and Sixt and Europcar list desks at Santa Maria airport. Book the car when you book the flight, so it is waiting when you land at 07:00.

Without a car, the day shrinks to Vila do Porto. Bus route 3 links the airport with the harbour in Vila do Porto hourly on weekdays, from 07:30 to about 18:00, with Saturday trips in the morning only and none on Sundays. The summer beach bus, route 5, ran daily from 1 July to 15 September 2026. None of the buses reaches São Lourenço or Maia. A taxi from the Central de Táxis de Santa Maria (+351 296 882 199) can cover a short round trip, but agree the fare first.

A route for one day

The island covers about 97 km², so a loop by car is short. This order keeps the remote north and east for the middle of the day and ends near the airport:

  • Breakfast in Vila do Porto, the island's only town, which the airport sits on the edge of.
  • Barreiro da Faneca, on the north coast, a protected landscape of red clay known as the "red desert of the Azores".
  • Pico Alto, at 587 m the highest point, with a short stairway from the car park to the summit. If the top is in cloud, carry on and try again later in the day.
  • Baía de São Lourenço, the east-facing bay with its terraced vineyards in a grid of stone walls. The Voltas viewpoints are on the bends of the road down from Santa Bárbara, and the Espigão viewpoint is across the bay. In the bathing season (15 June to 14 September in 2026) the beach and the natural pools have lifeguards.
  • Maia, on the south-east coast, with the Aveiro waterfall, about 80 m high, above the village, and the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse on Ponta do Castelo, first lit in 1927. The lighthouse can be visited only with a prior booking.
  • Praia Formosa, the long beach on the south coast, whose pale limestone sand is unlike any other beach in the Azores. It is close to Vila do Porto, which makes it a good last stop before the drive back to the airport.

If you would rather walk than drive, choose one short trail and drop the rest. Linear trails need a taxi at one end, and on 11 October 2026 the official alerts page listed PR05SMA Costa Sul and PR04SMA Santo Espírito - Maia as closed. Check trails.visitazores.com/en/alerts the day before.

The risk you take

The whole plan rests on two flights. Santa Maria has a single airport, and if the evening flight is cancelled for weather you stay the night and wait for the next free seat. Do not plan it for the day before an international flight out of Ponta Delgada. Pack a toothbrush and charger anyway, and keep the car hire company's number so you can extend it.

A day trip also means seeing most of the island from the car. The Grande Rota walk, the fossil coast west of Praia Formosa and an evening in São Lourenço need at least one night.

Quick answers

Can I visit Santa Maria in a day from São Miguel? Yes. In October 2026 SATA Air Açores flew out at 06:30, landing at 07:00, and back in the evening (19:55 on Sunday 11 October, 21:05 on Monday 12 October). That leaves about twelve hours on the island.

Do I need a car? For anything beyond Vila do Porto, yes. Weekday buses link the airport and the town, but none goes to São Lourenço or Maia, and there are none on Sundays.

Can I take the ferry instead? Not for a day trip. The 2026 summer boat took over five hours each way and sailed on different days in each direction.

What if the evening flight is cancelled? You stay overnight and take the next available seat. Never plan a day trip just before a long-haul flight home.
