Cycling on Santa Maria: the official road loop, the Pico Alto enduro trails and bike hire

The official Santa Maria road loop is 52.77 km with 1,244 m of climbing, from the Vila do Porto town hall past Praia Formosa, Malbusca, Santo Espírito, São Lourenço and the north coast. Plus the three short enduro descents off Pico Alto, why bikes are banned on the walking trails, SATA's bike rules in October 2026 and what you can hire on the island.

Santa Maria is small enough to ride round in a day. The official road loop covers 52.77 km and climbs 1,244 m, and it passes most of what you came to the island for: Praia Formosa, the high villages of the south, the lighthouse at Maia, the vineyard bay of São Lourenço and the north coast. The real choice is between that loop on a road bike and the three short enduro descents off Pico Alto, which need a different bike and dry ground. Bring a road or enduro bike from home, because hire on the island is limited, and keep off the walking trails, which are closed to bikes.

The road loop at a glance

The Azores tourism board publishes the route as "Tour of Stª Maria" on its Biking Azores site. The figures there: 52.77 km, 1,244 m of climbing, about three hours of riding. The site rates it red for fitness and green for technique: the legs do the work, and the riding itself is all on tarmac.

It is a circuit. It starts and ends on Largo Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the square in front of the town hall in Vila do Porto, so you can leave from your door if you stay in town. The route never gets high: the official profile tops out at about 330 m and drops to about 35 m near Praia Formosa. The climbing comes from going up and down that range again and again, and some of the ramps are short and steep.

The route, section by section

The official description is turn by turn with kilometre marks. Here it is in outline.

You leave Vila do Porto west up the main street and turn right towards Valverde, down and then up a short steep slope. Go straight on at the crossroads at km 3.3, turn right 500 m later and drop towards Praia Formosa. The route suggests a stop at the viewpoint above the beach.

At km 6.5 turn left for Malbusca. This is the first long climb of the day: the profile goes from about 40 m to over 300 m in the next four kilometres. Turn right at km 11.8 for Glória.

Turn right at the crossroads at km 16.7, right again about a kilometre on after Fonte do Jordão, and join the main road, the R1-2. From here you can descend to Maia or ride down to the viewpoint over the lighthouse. Both are out and back, so you climb up again what you went down.

The main road takes you on to Santo Espírito, past the church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação. Turn right onto the R3-2 through Azenhas de Cima. Near km 29.7 a viewpoint on the right looks over the Baía de São Lourenço. From the crossroads below you can go down into the bay, or go back and climb to Santa Bárbara.

After the last climb the route suggests a rest at Poço da Pedreira, the flooded quarry. Then it follows the R1-2 through Santa Bárbara and along the north coast, past the viewpoint over the Lagoinhas islets. Turn right at km 41.7, right again towards Anjos, and at km 46.1 left towards the airport and back into Vila do Porto.

The two side options, Maia and São Lourenço, are the ones that cost the most effort. Both villages sit at the bottom of steep roads, and the official 52.77 km leaves you to decide whether you go down. If you want a swim at Maia or São Lourenço, plan for it before you set off rather than at the junction.

Who the loop suits

A rider who does 50 km with a thousand metres of climbing at home will finish it in a day with stops. If that sounds like a lot, cut it in two. Ride the western half as a morning out from Vila do Porto to Praia Formosa and Malbusca, and do the east and the north coast another day with a car or a taxi to the start. Distances on the island are short, but buses are few, so plan your own way back.

Take water and food. The villages on the route are small, and outside Vila do Porto you cannot count on finding a café open, least of all on a Sunday.

The Pico Alto enduro trails

The other three routes on the official site are short downhill tracks off Pico Alto, the island's highest point at 587 m. All three start at the car park by the viewpoint below the summit and drop about 220 m through planted Japanese cedar forest:

  • Trilho do Tanque: 1.36 km, about 14 minutes, single track with fast sections and sharp bends, ending at the old forest warden's house. Rated blue for fitness and blue for technique.
  • East Alto Trail: 1.34 km, about six minutes. It shares its first part with the Tanque trail and joins NR2 near the end. Blue and blue.
  • Trail NR2: 0.77 km, about 14 minutes, very steep, with stony ground towards the end. Blue for fitness, black for technique.

The official notes say the same thing about all three: use a downhill or enduro bike, the ground is very soft earth, it grips well when dry and gets very slippery when wet. Pico Alto is also the part of the island most often in cloud and the wettest. Up to 1,800 mm of rain a year falls in places in the eastern uplands, against a few tens of millimetres a month in Vila do Porto in summer. Ride these after a dry spell, not the morning after rain.

There is no uplift and no bus to the top. You need a car or a taxi to the Pico Alto car park, or a long road climb from the coast.

Bikes are not allowed on the walking trails

The footpaths are off limits. The official leaflets for the Pico Alto forest loop (PRC02SMA), the Costa Norte (PR01SMA) and the Areia Branca (PR06SMA) all say that bicycles, motor vehicles and horses are not allowed. Stay on the roads and the three enduro tracks. On 17 October 2026 the official alerts page also listed two Santa Maria walking trails, PR04SMA and PR05SMA, as temporarily closed.

Bringing your own bike

There is no ferry to Santa Maria outside the summer line, so in most of the year a bike comes on the plane. On SATA Air Açores, the inter-island airline, the rules in October 2026 were these:

  • A bike gets an extra 10 kg of free allowance on SATA Air Açores flights.
  • Maximum size 240 × 60 × 100 cm, in a strong individual bag or box.
  • Handlebar turned 90 degrees and fixed to the frame, pedals off, tyres let down, and air suspension and shocks deflated.
  • Book the bike when you book the flight, through the SATA contact centre (+351 296 209 720, info@sata.pt), a sales office or your travel agency, giving the type, weight and size.

If you have not booked it, a SATA Air Açores flight may take it if there is room. If it travels on a later flight, you collect it yourself. On a ticket that includes an Azores Airlines flight, the Azores Airlines rules apply, and those need the equipment booked in advance with a special service fee. Check the current terms on the SATA sports equipment page before you fly. In October 2026 the same page warned of a ground-handling strike at Azores airports from 21 October to 3 November, with possible disruption, which is worth knowing if your bike is checked luggage.

Hiring a bike on the island

The Praia Formosa campsite lists bicycle, surfboard and scooter rental. We could not confirm any other bike-hire firm on Santa Maria on an operator's own website in October 2026, and we have not found a place that rents road bikes or enduro bikes on the island. If you want either, bring your own. Ask at the tourist office in Vila do Porto or at your accommodation what is available that week.

When to ride

Summer is the easy season. Vila do Porto gets about 22 mm of rain in June and 25 mm in July, and the average high in August is about 25 °C. Rain picks up from September, to about 84 mm in October and 102 mm in November, and winter brings the wind: the December average is about 23 km/h, more on the exposed north coast. Spring and early autumn are cooler for the climbs, but carry a rain jacket and expect fog on Pico Alto in any month.

Quick answers

How long is the official Santa Maria road loop? 52.77 km with 1,244 m of climbing, from the town hall square in Vila do Porto and back. The official estimate is three hours of riding; allow most of a day with stops and side trips.

Can I mountain bike on the walking trails? No. The official leaflets ban bicycles on the walking trails. Mountain bikers have three short official enduro trails off Pico Alto, all starting at the summit car park.

Can I bring my bike on a SATA flight? Yes. In October 2026 SATA Air Açores gave a bike an extra 10 kg allowance, up to 240 × 60 × 100 cm, packed, with pedals off and the handlebar turned. Book it when you book the flight.

Where can I rent a bike on Santa Maria? The Praia Formosa campsite lists bicycle rental. We found no confirmed rental of road or enduro bikes on the island in October 2026, so bring your own if you need one.

The Areia Branca walk on Santa Maria: PR06SMA from Praia Formosa over Pico Alto to São Lourenço

PR06SMA Areia Branca is the only official trail that crosses Santa Maria from coast to coast: 11.7 km one way, medium, about four and a half hours. It runs from the limestone sand of Praia Formosa past the ruined São João Batista fort, through the Almagreira woods to Pico Alto (587 m), through Santa Bárbara and down into the terraced vineyards of São Lourenço. No bus reaches the end, so here is how to do it with a car and a taxi, how to split it, and the trail alerts for October 2026.
