Getting around Graciosa: the bus timetable, car hire, taxis and what you can do on foot

Graciosa is 12.5 kilometres long and 7 kilometres at its widest, so nothing on it is far. How often the bus runs is the harder part. The buses run on weekdays, with a last departure from Santa Cruz at 17:00, two loops on Saturday morning and early afternoon, and none on Sunday. Whether you need a car depends on how many days you have and how much of the island you want to see.

The short version:

• Two or three days, and you want the Caldeira, Carapacho and the north coast: hire a car.
• A longer stay based in Santa Cruz, with walking as the main plan: the bus works on weekdays, with a taxi for the gaps.
• Arriving by plane: the airport is 2 kilometres from Santa Cruz, close enough that the transfer is never the hard part.

All public buses on the island are run by one company, the Empresa de Transportes Colectivos da Ilha Graciosa, from Rua da Boa Vista in Santa Cruz. It runs two zones, and every trip starts and ends in Santa Cruz. There is no hub anywhere else, so going from Praia to Luz means riding a loop that passes both, not changing buses.

The timetables below are the ones the company posted on its website on 30 September 2026. They are marked "normal period" and carry no year, so treat them as a guide and phone the company on +351 295 732 363 before you build a day around one bus.

Zone 1 covers Praia, Luz and Guadalupe. On weekdays buses leave Santa Cruz at 07:30, 08:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 15:45 and 17:00, and each loop is back in Santa Cruz 45 to 65 minutes later. Some run clockwise through Praia first, others through Guadalupe first; on Thursdays a few are swapped round or add Fenais and Lagoa. On Saturdays there are only two, at 08:30 and 12:30.

From 1 July to 30 September the 10:30 and 15:45 buses go down to Carapacho, for the thermal baths and the sea pools. Outside those dates the timetable shows no bus to Carapacho at all.

Zone 2 covers Almas, Ribeirinha, Vitória and the villages around the airport. On weekdays it leaves Santa Cruz at 07:30, 08:20, 09:30, 12:30, 15:00 and 17:00, plus 11:45 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The 09:30, 12:30, 15:00 and 17:00 buses pass the airport. No Saturday buses are listed on this zone.

What the timetable does not give is the time at each stop, only the departure from Santa Cruz and the return. Ask the driver when the next bus comes back through your village, and write it down.

Neither loop lists a stop at the Caldeira or the Furna do Enxofre. The closest the buses get is Pedras Brancas, on one afternoon loop, and Luz. From Luz a marked trail climbs to the crater rim (see below), which gets you to the Caldeira without a car, though not down to the cave.

Carapacho is covered only in summer, as above. Barro Vermelho and the Ponta da Barca lighthouse on the north coast are not named on either timetable.

For a short stay a hire car is what makes the island work. The road from Santa Cruz runs 3 kilometres to the centre of Guadalupe, and from there 3.8 kilometres towards Pedras Brancas before the turn up to the Caldeira. Inside the Caldeira the road goes through a tunnel of about 200 metres into the crater itself.

Several rental firms offer pick-up at the airport. Book the car when you book the flight rather than on arrival, above all in summer. Graciosa is also the flattest island in the Azores, which you notice on the roads.

Taxis fill the gaps the bus leaves: Sunday, evenings after the 17:00 departures, and the trip back from the end of a linear walk. Numbers change and we could not confirm current fares, so ask your accommodation to give you a number when you check in, and agree the price for longer trips before you set off.

On a weekday you can combine a bus with a trail. Three of the island's routes start on a bus line, according to the regional trail register:

• Baía da Folga (PR03GRA) starts in the centre of Luz, near the Holy Spirit chapel, and runs 2.1 kilometres down through vineyards to the Portinho da Folga. It is graded easy and takes about an hour. It is one way, so you walk back up to Luz for the bus.
• Subida ao Cume (PRC05GRA) is a circular route from the church in Luz up to the Caldeira rim and round it: 9.7 kilometres, about three and a half hours, graded hard. Because it comes back to Luz, it is the one walk that fits a bus day cleanly. Take an early Zone 1 bus out and check the afternoon return with the driver.
• Das Vinhas ao Mar (PR04GRA) starts by the old primary school in Bom Jesus, on the Zone 2 loop, and runs 6.6 kilometres through the vineyard corrals down to the bathing area at Barro Vermelho, about two and a half hours. The end is not on a bus line, so plan a taxi back or walk on.

The Atlânticoline ferry docks at Vila da Praia, which is on the Zone 1 loop. In 2026 it called only between 1 June and 28 September, so outside those months everyone arrives by air.

The airport is 2 kilometres from Santa Cruz. Four Zone 2 buses pass it on weekdays, but their times are set around Santa Cruz, not the flights, so a taxi or a hire car collected at the terminal is the practical choice. If you have light luggage and arrive in daylight, the walk into town is short.

Is there a bus on Graciosa on Sundays?

No. The timetable the bus company posted in September 2026 lists no Sunday departures on either zone, and on Saturday only two Zone 1 loops, at 08:30 and 12:30.

Can you get to the Furna do Enxofre by bus?

Not directly. No bus stops at the Caldeira. The nearest option is a Zone 1 bus to Luz and the Subida ao Cume trail, a hard loop of about three and a half hours round the crater rim. It takes you to the Caldeira but not into the cave.

Do you need a car on Graciosa?

For a stay of two or three days, yes, if you want to see the Caldeira, Carapacho and the north coast. For a longer stay in Santa Cruz with walks as the main plan, weekday buses and the odd taxi are enough.

How do you get from Graciosa airport to Santa Cruz?

By taxi, hire car, or on foot: it is about 2 kilometres. Zone 2 buses pass the airport on weekdays, but their times are not set around the flights.
