Staying overnight on Corvo: where to sleep and eat, the birding season and the flights

You can see Corvo in a day from Flores and leave on the afternoon boat. Staying the night buys you time: a second chance at the crater if it was in cloud, both walking trails, the village after the boats have gone, and, in October, the birding season that fills the island with birders. The cost is exposure to the weather. Corvo is reached by a 12-seat boat and a short airstrip, and the weather can stop either. Plan the stay with slack on both sides.

A day trip gives you about seven hours on Corvo in summer and a little over five in spring and autumn, going by Atlânticoline's 2026 timetable. That is enough for the viewpoint and the village, or for one walk. The crater loop (PRC02COR, 4.8 km, about two and a half hours) and the walk down to the village (PR01COR, 10.3 km, about three hours) together need most of a day on their own. The crater is often in cloud, and with a night on the island you can wait for it to clear.

The other reason is the village itself. Vila do Corvo is the only settlement on the island and the seat of Portugal's smallest municipality, with 435 residents in 2023. The old quarter is a knot of narrow lanes, which the trail notes say helped the islanders during pirate raids in the 16th and 17th centuries, and three stone windmills stand on the Caminho dos Moinhos. The windmills date from the 19th and 20th centuries, and their triangular sails are a design the municipality calls rare in the Azores.

Everything is in or next to the village. The municipality's official lists, as of 2026, are short:

• Hotel Comodoro, on Caminho do Areeiro, the one hotel.
• Joe & Vera's, three local-accommodation units (Vintage, Place and Villa) on Caminho da Várzea.
• Casas do Corvo, three houses (Casa da Octávia, Casa do Nitsa and Casa do Henri) on Rua do Porto da Casa.
• The Areia Municipal Leisure Park, next to Praia da Areia, where camping is free. It has toilets with showers, barbecue and washing areas and charging points. You need prior authorisation from the municipality, so send in the camping application form on cm-corvo.pt before you arrive.

With this few beds, book early for any date, and months ahead for October, when birding groups take most of what there is.

The municipality lists one restaurant, Restaurante Caldeirão on Caminho dos Moinhos, open daily from 07:00 to 23:00. Several cafés and snack bars fill the gaps: BBC on Avenida Nova, Irmãos Metralha on Rua Joaquim Pedro Coelho (daily 07:00 to midnight), Izzy Burguer on the Estrada do Caldeirão, open evenings on weekdays and from noon at weekends, and O Manny on Caminho da Várzea. Opening hours on a small island move with the season, so check before you go.

What to order, from the municipality's own list of island dishes:

• Conger eel stew with potatoes, peppers, garlic and bay.
• Grilled limpets.
• Corvo cheese, a semi-hard cow's milk cheese cured on the island.
• Erva do calhau fritters, made with a seaweed gathered off the shore rocks.

Bring cash. Guides disagree on whether Corvo has a working cash machine, so draw euros on Flores.

Casa do Bote in the village is the tourist information office. It also shows a historic whaleboat; whaling from Corvo went on until the mid-20th century. The Corvo Wild Birds Interpretation Centre on Canada do Graciosa has a sightings panel and exhibits on the island's resident and migrant birds, open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00. Praia da Areia, the island's only sand beach, is a short walk from anywhere in the village. Porto da Casa, the old landing on the east side, faces the morning sun.

Every autumn Corvo becomes one of the best places in Europe to see North American birds. Atlantic low-pressure systems push migrants off the American east coast, and Corvo, at the western edge of the Western Palearctic, is the first land they reach. The municipality calls October the peak month, and birders' reports put the best window in early to mid-October, following the storms.

In October 2019, after Hurricane Lorenzo crossed the western Azores, one visiting birder's three-week stay produced Prothonotary Warbler, Ovenbird, Magnolia Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Philadelphia Vireo and Northern Waterthrush. Birders work the valleys, Fojo among them, as well as the fields around the village and the reservoir. Cory's shearwaters are the seabird you will notice most, from the boat and along the coast.

If you come for this:

• Book the bed first and the travel second. Accommodation fills in October.
• Expect rain and low cloud. October is wet on Corvo, and the weather that brings the birds is the same weather that cancels boats and flights.
• Keep your distance. The municipality asks birders to respect habitats and stay well back from the birds.

Corvo's airport has one 800-metre runway beside the village, opened in 2005, and only SATA Air Açores Dash 8 aircraft use it. The municipality lists connections with Flores, Horta and Ponta Delgada; the hop from Flores takes about 20 minutes. Frequencies change by season, so check the current timetable with SATA Air Açores.

The same Atlantic weather that brings the birds in October closes the island. Flights on the short, exposed runway are cancelled often in autumn and winter, and the boat stops when the sea is rough. The municipality's advice is to watch the forecast, book ahead and travel with essentials only, as space on regional flights and boats is limited.

• Leave at least one spare day between leaving Corvo and any flight home from another island.
• Note both the boat and the flight timetable, so you know your alternatives if one is cancelled.
• Keep your accommodation's number handy. If you are stuck, you will need the bed for another night.

Is it worth staying overnight on Corvo?

Yes, if you want to walk both trails, see the crater with a better chance of clear weather, or bird in October. A day trip covers the viewpoint and the village. A night gives you the island after the boats have left.
