The Azores Government says housing policy will continue beyond the Recovery and Resilience Plan, while parties in the Regional Assembly pressed for more affordable homes and longer-term action.

The Azores Government said in the Regional Assembly in Horta that its housing policy will not end with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Maria João Carreiro, the secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, made the statement during a BE interpellation on the housing crisis and acknowledged the challenge of continuing to strengthen the supply of affordable housing.

Carreiro said that more than 138 million euros had been invested in housing since 2021, including about 75 million euros from the Region's budget. She said many families were not finding as immediate a response as they wanted for their housing access needs and expectations, but said the Regional Government was doing its part.

PS deputy Cristina Calisto asked about support for families unable to bear housing costs and about overcrowding. She also demanded answers over rising loan payments linked to escalating interest rates. PSD deputy Luís Raposo praised the government's housing support measures and said the Azores were an example for the country because of PRR execution, while criticising previous PS governments in the region.

Chega deputy José Pacheco called for long-term planning, self-build solutions and less bureaucracy. IL deputy Nuno Barata said the housing situation had nothing to do with local accommodation and called for more supply and solutions to regulatory issues. PAN deputy Pedro Neves proposed urban rehabilitation, recovery of vacant public property, sustainable construction and affordable renting.

PPM's João Mendonça highlighted the territorial and population-retention role of housing policies. CDS-PP deputy Luís Silveira said his party would not allow the end of the PRR to reduce the region's housing response capacity.
